FKIP – Fine Arts Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held an art exhibition entitled “Showback” at the NN Art Space Gallery Karanganyar.

This exhibition was opened by Nanang Yulianto as a lecturer in Fine Arts Education and owner of the NN Art Space Gallery on Thursday (9/9/2021). The exhibition lasts for five days from September 10 to 14, 2021. With the opening of this exhibition, Nanang hopes that his gallery can become a space to introduce and bring art to life in Solo.

“Hopefully, we can do more to bring art to life, which so far may have been a bit out of place in Solo,” he said.

According to Nanang, activities related to creative works, both visual and thought-provoking, such as exhibitions, work reviews, and discussions of this kind can show the true face of art to the public.

“To present the auras of art, auras of our thoughts, so that later these thoughts can be socialized to a wider public,” he said.

This showback exhibition (read: torn) is the first art exhibition program in Solo that uses denim as the basic material. According to the chairman of the committee, Raras Melninda, the choice of denim as the basic material of the work cannot be separated from the consumptive culture of the community, especially young people, for clothing made from denim as a contemporary lifestyle.

“There are lots of denim that are not used now, such as those that are used or torn, so we reuse them by recycling and upcycle them to made works,” he said when met by the UNS FKIP Public Relations Team.

The exhibition which was attended by 17 participants from lecturers and students of Fine Arts Education carried the main theme “Solo The Spirit of Java”. From this theme, 22 works have been exhibited in the form of Solo City icons such as the Gedhe market, the palace, batik motifs, culinary arts, culture, to angkringan or hik. These denim artworks are made using various techniques such as sewing, painting, weaving, and patchwork.

The creation of works of art using media that is trivial, random, and neglected does not prevent participants from working. Not only the media, even in the current state of the Covid pandemic, it is not an obstacle, it also poses a challenge to discover many new things behind it.

“Hopefully this showback exhibition will become a spring during arid exhibitions during the pandemic. The pandemic is not an enemy, but we must make him a friend. We must be able to adapt to the pandemic so that we are not hindered from working,” said Raras.

In addition to the exhibition, there was also a mask painting workshop with Recycled Denim and a surgical talk show with two speakers, namely Figures Rahman Fuad, MA, and Apika Nuraini, S.Sn., M.Sn. which will be broadcast live on the @NNArt Space Instagram account.
