FKIP – Involving the role of the community and parents is the key to educational success and is an important component in improving school quality. To enhance the quality of education, dedicated academics from the Guidance and Counseling Study Program (Prodi) of the Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta who are members of Community Service (PkM) have carried out a workshop entitled capacity building parents last Tuesday (20/6/2023). The program was carried out in the Hall of SMP Negeri 2 Sukoharjo.
The PkM team is chaired by Dr. Ribut Purwaningrum, M.Pd. and accompanied by members Prof. Dr. Asrowi, M.Pd., Dr. Nahus Surur, M.Pd., Ma’rifatin Indah Kholili, M.Pd., Citra Tectona Suryawati, M.Pd., and Adi Dewantoro, M.Pd. This service is held to improve the quality of education through collaboration to increase capacity building.
The implementation of guidance and counseling services in Indonesia currently still focuses on the needs and problems faced by students. When providing services, guidance, and counseling, teachers often work independently using the skills and competencies they have mastered. Handling problems and student needs requires effective collaboration between schools, advice, and counseling teachers, students, and parents.
Furthermore, facts on the ground show that parents, in dealing with students’ problems, tend to rely on guidance and counseling teachers at school. This interaction pattern ultimately needs to be addressed. Based on this problem point, the Guidance and Counseling Study Program PkM Team designed a series of workshops to increase the capacity building of parents to improve the quality of education.
The workshop is packed with exciting activities. Together with the Guidance and Counseling Study Program PkM team, participants are guided through on-the-job training and in-service training. Participants are guaranteed to be able to actively participate in each session by opening up space for discussion and best practice. Not only that, mentoring and reviews by mentors are also facilitated by the team to help participants deepen capacity building.
This innovative approach not only equips participants with new skills but also sparks enthusiasm in exploring the need to improve the quality of education through effective collaboration. Through practical training, interactive discussions, and comprehensive guidance, the Guidance and Counseling Study Program PkM Team succeeded in implementing capacity building for parents/guardians of students and guidance and counseling teachers.
This initiative not only reflects UNS’s commitment to building community capacity but also shows the strength of collaboration between the academic world and society. With the success of PkM, the university is proud to continue to encourage the sustainable dissemination of knowledge.
