FKIP – Lecturers and students of the S-1 and S-2 Chemistry Education Study Programs at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta who are members of the Research Group for Natural Products, Molecular Engineering, and Chemical Learning carry out Training and Assistance for the Production of Turmeric and Temugiring Essential Oils through the Utilization of TTG Small Industrial Scale Steam-Water Distillation Equipment and Marketing Through Shopee at UKM Suti Sehati  in Nguter Sukoharjo District.

This service activity lasted for four months from April 2024 to July 2024. The team consisted of: Dr. Sri Retno Dwi Ariani, S.Si, M.Si as chairperson; Dr. Endang Sutilowati, S.Si., M.Si, and Dr. Maria Ulfa, S.Si., M.Si as members; and three students named Nadia Indri Safitri, Azizah Nur Prasetyawati, S.Pd, and Khoirur Rohmaniatush Sholihah as implementing assistants. This service activity was carried out at Suti Sehati Herbal Small and Medium Enterprises (UKM), Pengkol Village, Nguter, Sukoharjo, Central Java.

The background of this service is that UKM Suti Sehati has not been able to produce turmeric and temugiring essential oils on an industrial scale. The team found many turmeric and temugiring rhizome plants around the service location, which had not been optimally utilized. In addition, UKM Suti Sehati do not yet have online marketing capabilities through the marketplace.

The objectives of this service can be viewed from two aspects, namely the production aspect and the marketing aspect. From the production aspect, carrying out counseling, training, and mentoring activities for UKM Suti Sehati on processing turmeric rhizome and temugiring rhizome raw materials into turmeric essential oil products and temugiring essential oil through isolation techniques with the distillation method. While from the marketing aspect, conducting counseling, training and mentoring for UKM Suti Sehati about online marketing through the Shopee marketplace for products produced by UKM Suti Sehati.

The team hopes that this service activity can improve the ability to produce turmeric rhizome essential oil and temugiring rhizome essential oil as aromatherapy oil, expand the market, and increase UKM income. For researchers, this activity is useful as a means to implement research results, add relationships, and contribute to the welfare of the nation.

This activity went through seven stages starting with the implementation of socialization and program coordination; handover of essential oil distillation equipment; implementation of counseling, training, and assistance in harvesting, sorting, processing turmeric rhizomes and temugiring rhizomes from wet form to simplisia; training and assistance in turmeric rhizome and temugiring rhizome essential oil extraction techniques using the steam-water distillation method; and conducting online marketing training and assistance through the marketplace (Shopee), and ending with an evaluation of the results. The products produced from this activity are turmeric rhizome essential oil and temugiring rhizome essential oil which have been marketed online through Shopee.

In addition, UKM Suti Sehati have also marketed these products offline by participating in the Sukoharjo Expo 2024 exhibition which is a series of activities commemorating the 78th anniversary of Sukoharjo Regency, the event was held from July 3-7, 2024 at the Regional Potential Promotion Center Building (GPPPD Sukoharjo) and was enlivened by 165 booths, which are expected to improve the economy of the Sukoharjo area.
