FKIP – Academic, Research, and Student Affairs Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held an Inaugural Lecture for New Students Postgraduate FKIP UNS with the theme “Improving Research Methodology Capability as a Timely Study Solution for FKIP UNS Postgraduate Students during the Covid-19 Pandemic” on Monday (23/8/2021) via Zoom Cloud Meeting.

This inaugural lecture presented Prof. Dr. Sugiyono, M.Pd. from Yogyakarta State University (UNY) as a lecturer and expert in the field of research methodology. In addition, this event was also attended by Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si. as the Dean of FKIP UNS, Prof. Dr. Slamet Subiyantoro, M.Si. as Deputy Dean of Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FKIP UNS, Dr. Dewi Kusuma Wardani, M.Si. as Deputy Dean of Human Resources, Finance, and Logistics, Dr. Djono, M.Pd. as Deputy Dean of Planning, Business Cooperation, and Information, and Heads of Masters and Doctoral Study Programs within FKIP UNS. This inaugural lecture was attended by 192 new FKIP UNS Postgraduate students spread across five Doctoral Programs and 17 Masters Programs.


Dr. Mardiyana in his speech explained that this activity was focused on providing briefing for students to be fluent in carrying out lectures, providing encouragement to achieve Key Performance Indicators (IKU) 3, especially students are able to publish articles in reputable international journals, as well as encourage the internationalization of Study Programs.

“In the FKIP environment, there are 47 Study Programs, 24 Undergraduate Programs, 1 PPG Study Program, 17 Master’s Programs, 5 Doctoral Programs. With so many Study Programs, Postgraduate and Doctoral students are strongly encouraged to be able to publish international publications. To be able to do this, the quality of students must be good. This inaugural lecture is an effort so that students understand research methodology well and how to publish it in reputable international journals,” explained Dr. Mardiyana.

The activity was continued with a material presentation by Prof. Sugiyono. He presented material on improving the ability of research methods as a timely study solution. He explained that during the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as technological advances influenced research methods.

“Of course, in this pandemic era, studies are undergoing adjustments. Research in the pandemic era can use Google Forms or e-mails as a substitute for paper questionnaires and can use Zoom media, telephone, or video calls for interview purposes,” said Prof. Sugiyono.

Prof. Sugiyono also provided tips to students about writing theses and dissertations during the pandemic so that they are smooth and can graduate on time, namely intentions that are carried out, understanding the topic under study, understanding research methods, using prescribed thesis and dissertation writing guidelines, good communication with supervisors, online data collection or document research, strong signal, and pleasing informants.

The activity continued with a question and answer session which was divided into two terms. The first term was attended by three students and the second term was attended by two students. After the question and answer session, the activity continued with the presentation of the internationalization program at FKIP UNS, the introduction of Siakad, and ended with a prayer and closing.
