FKIP – A student of the Fine Arts Education Study Program (PSR) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta, Zaenal Effendi, has won national level graphic design and videography competitions which he has participated in online since 2020 to 2021 after honing his ability to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) features and applications during the pandemic.

Zainal, who actively participates in several organizations, such as the Karanganyar Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and the UNS Karanganyar Student Association, feels that there are restrictions on activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic which makes him more free time between lectures. He said that the existence of these limitations indirectly encouraged him to look for opportunities to remain active and creative. One of them is to hone his ability to use ICT features and applications.


Thanks to his ICT literacy, he has won several national level competitions. The last time, he participated in the short film competition branch of the National Competence of Innovation and Creativity for Teacher Candidates organized by the Academic, Research, and Student Affairs of FKIP UNS on Tuesday (27/7/2021). The short film entitled Teacher, Creator, and Pandemic, won 1st place in the competition. Bringing material on the role of students in helping educators during the pandemic, he hopes the short film will serve as an example for educators that the pandemic is not an obstacle to providing effective education.

“I hope the short film can provide an example and education that the pandemic is not an obstacle for teachers to provide effective education. By using information and communication technology, teachers can optimize the educational process by making learning videos and acting as creators of educational content,” said Zaenal.

Meanwhile, other national-level competitions that he won include 1st place in the Lawu Begel Advertising Video Competition in 2020, 3rd place in the HMS FT UNS Poster Competition in 2021, and 2nd place in the Nuclear Youth Summit Infographic Poster Competition of the National Nuclear Youth Community in 2021. He was also become the talented champion of the Genre Duta Genre of Karanganyar Regency.
