FKIP – The presentation of material on guidance and counseling and learning strategies at Higher Education closed the series of activities for the Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta in 2021 on the first day. The material was delivered online through the Zoom Cloud Meeting on Sunday (15/8/2021).

Presenting a speaker named Dr. Ribut Purwaningrum, M.Pd., the material was delivered for 45 minutes with the theme “New Students in the Midst of a Pandemic”. Before entering the discussion of the material, Mrs. Naning started her presentation by conducting a small survey about the reasons new students chose FKIP UNS as a destination for further study through mentimeter.com.

“My hope is that 100% of new students choose the first choice of reasons, but it turns out that there are various reasons students choose. The first choice is cool UNS, cool alumni with brilliant careers have a percentage of 39%, the second choice is due to the choice of parents by 19%, the third choice is based on other people’s suggestions, and the last choice is because they are trapped by their own choices, ” said Dr.Ribut.

Entering the main event, the material presented had four subjects which included life orientation at university, the Covid-19 pandemic and self-development, student life challenges, and self-management strategies, and counseling guidance.

In her presentation, Naning gave various general descriptions of students. Starting from the picture that a student is a student with capable capabilities, to the clash of ideals they have to face in the world of campus. Students are also often depicted with actualization needs with great expectations. In connection with this description, Naning emphasized that students should design their future.

“My hope for new students, while it’s not too late and still early in the world of lectures, plan what kind of future you want. Because in essence, sometimes students forget that the process of becoming a student doesn’t just stop in semester 8, but there are still further processes that need to be passed,” she added.

The material was continued about the advantages and disadvantages of life as a student, as well as the condition of distance education during the pandemic. Naning also described several things related to the challenges of the existing pattern of online learning activities, ranging from adjusting to the use of the internet and its problems, character growth which is difficult to pursue due to boredom facing online lectures which are often known as Zoom fatigue and other technical matters.

The presentation of the material ended with the delivery of various challenges of student learning transitions during the pandemic, as well as the delivery of counseling services facilitated by UNS through the https://cdc.uns.ac.id/ website.

“In the lecture process, in addition to participating in learning and self-development activities, sometimes guidance and counseling services are needed to accompany the student learning process during lectures,” she concluded.
