FKIP – The Student Association of the Mechanical Engineering Education Study Program (HMP Kompresi) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a public speaking training with the theme “Awaken Your Quality, by Improving Your Speech” through Zoom Cloud Meeting on Saturday ( 18/9/2021).

This activity is the culmination of a series of Character Building and Introduction on the Area of Mechanical Engineering Education (Carburation) events. The event was opened by the vice-chairman of the Compression HMP, Rifqi Koes. In his speech, Rifqi expressed his hope for this public speaking training.

“Hopefully, this event can increase the knowledge of new students and other participants to improve their public speaking skills,” hoped Rifqi.

This training presented speaker Farah Yuki Prasetyawati who is Mawapres I FKIP UNS 2020. Yuki delivered the material with the title “Whispering Rhetoric #BeraniBicara”. The material begins with the presentation of the importance of public speaking.

“Every word that is spoken, is a reflection of the future,” explained Yuki, starting the material.

Next, Yuki conveyed tips on public speaking and the factors that affect a person’s public speaking ability.

“Speak systematically, meaning coherent, clear, understandable. Punching can stick to the hearts of others. And don’t just talk, but give motivation,” explained Yuki.

Next, Yuki shared the keys to successful public speaking which were assembled into 3M, namely mental, material, and media.

“There are 3 keys for someone to be successful in public speaking. First, mentally. When you’re mentally down, try to calm down, talk to a friend, or do something else. So that your mind will slowly rise. Second, prepare the material to be discussed. Third, the media. Prepare media whether posters, ppt, or others. Do not forget to pay attention to the appearance of the media presented. Try to be interesting and not boring,” said Yuki.

Yuki said something that often becomes a concern for everyone when doing public speaking, namely a self-confidence crisis that gives a person the effect of not being confident. As a solution, Yuki conveyed tips to practice self-confidence, namely being calm, warming up, getting to know the listener, and being sincere.

The material continued with the delivery of four rhetorical tips, namely vocal techniques, eye contact, gestures, and humor.

“The main thing about public speaking is confidence. Don’t be afraid and be yourself. Be a person who understands and be a part of them,” concluded Yuki.
