FKIP – Students who are members of the Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta Real Work Lecture (KKN) Group 157 invited the Papahan Village community to use empty land or open spaces as communal spaces to be more productive through the Communal Space Competition which was held from Wednesday-Sunday (18-29/8/2021).

The holding of the competition was motivated by the anxiety of UNS Group 157 KKN students about the number of people who lost their jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic. Seeing this, they want to encourage people to use vacant land to earn income.

In collaboration with the Papahan Village government and the Papahan Village Consultative Body (BPD), the competition focused on reforestation and community empowerment. The head of Papahan Village, Tri Sadono, explained that the competition was an adaptation of the vacant land utilization competition organized by the Karanganyar Regency Government.

“Utilization of vacant land or open space is actually not a new thing. Because activities like this have been carried out every year in Karanganyar. The difference is, usually, every village is followed by competition and held by the Regency Government village” explained Tri.

There were a number of assessment criteria in the competition, namely aspects of the concept of communal space, the variety of plants planted, the use of used goods, the application of health protocols, aesthetics, and tidiness. Meanwhile, the prizes from the competition are in the form of seeds, plants, fertilizers, and trash cans.
