FKIP – The Postgraduate Study Program of Biology Education, Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a public lecture “Biosystematics and Applied Microbiology” on Friday (17/9/2021) through Zoom Cloud Meeting.

The event was opened by Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si. as the Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS and guided by Dr. Umi Fatmawati as moderator.

The public lecture program “Biosystematics and Applied Microbiology” presented speakers in Food and Science, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yaya Rukayadi from the Department of Food Science, Faculty of Food Science and Technology, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

This general lecture discusses the diversity of bioactive components of Indonesian medicinal plants based on metabolomics and molecular studies.

“Plants contain bioactive components that can provide benefits for human health. However, the bioactive components in plants vary depending on where they are grown. For example, if the crown of the gods is planted in Papua and on the island of Java, the bioactive components contained in these plants will be different. The bioactive components that function as anti-cancer compounds in the crown of the god planted in Papua will be higher than the crown of the god planted in Java,” explained Prof. Yaya.

The general lecture and presentation of this material gave participants new knowledge that plants planted in different places will produce different benefits depending on the levels of their bioactive components.

The public lecture was closed with a discussion between the presenters and participants. Several participants asked questions to informants regarding the use of native Indonesian plants in the manufacture of medicines and how to process them.
