FKIP – Science Education Study Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta invites foreign Professors in the framework of Visiting Professors with the theme “STEM Integration in School”. This online activity through the Zoom Meeting platform was held for two days on November 15 and 19, 2021. The Professor is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Linda Hobbs is a teacher and STEM Teaching & Learning expert from the School of Education, Deakin University, Australia.

The activity on the first day was attended by more than 100 participants consisting of lecturers and students of Science Education FKIP UNS. The event started with remarks from the Head of the Science Education Study Program, FKIP UNS, Dr. paed. Nurma Yunita Indriyanti, M.Sc., M.Sc. followed by remarks by the Deputy Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FKIP UNS, Prof. Dr. Slamet Subiyantoro, M.Si. while simultaneously opening the event symbolically.

In his presentation, Dr. Hobbs provides material on STEM in Australia, Why STEM?, Framing STEM (what is it?), Approaches to STEM in schools, STEM teaching, and learning, Doing STEM, and What have we learned so far about how to implement STEM well?. Next Dr. Hobbs also provides activities for students to apply STEM in groups, namely designing a technology that is inspired by nature.

Then on the second day, Dr. Hobbs continued his presentation of material on STEM in Indonesia – how does it compare to Australia?, Planning for STEM learning and assessment, Looking for construction of new practices and beliefs, Key pillars for successful and sustainable, STEM programs in schools, and Final messages about making STEM education work. After the presentation, it was followed by a question and answer session. Several lecturers and students are interested in discussing with Dr. Hobbs to learn about STEM and its application in schools. The event, which was moderated by Bayu Antrakusuma, ran smoothly until the activity was over.

This activity in the framework of Visiting Professor is expected to provide strengthening knowledge about STEM to students and lecturers of the Science Education Study Program FKIP UNS. “Hopefully this activity will make students as prospective teachers ready to implement STEM in their schools,” concluded the moderator.
