FKIP – Chemistry Education Student Association (HMP) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education ( FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) held a Chemistry Education Alumni Association Meeting on Sunday (5/12/2021). This activity presented the alumni of Chemistry Education FKIP UNS who is now a Next-Generation Research Fellow at the Department of Chemistry, Hiroshima University, Herry Wijayanto, S.Pd., M.Sc.

This alumni gathering was held in the form of a talk show to foster enthusiasm, introduce Chemistry Education alumni to students, and as a trigger in increase their knowledge of the world of work. This activity is also intended to involve alumni in the development of study programs.

The activity continued with the presentation of experiences by Herry Wijiyanto who was connected directly from Japan. At the beginning of the presentation, Herry explained his interest in chemistry.

“I have loved chemistry since high school. Have participated in the Chemistry Olympiad at the high school level and won 2nd place. Then, entering the Chemistry Education FKIP UNS is a parental direction, “said Herry.

Furthermore, the 2016 PIMNAS finalist also explained his short journey while studying at Chemistry Education FKIP UNS.

“While studying at UNS, he participated in the choir UKM activities at FKIP UNS. In addition, he was a finalist in a writing competition at Padang State University, and in 2016 he succeeded in becoming a PIMNAS finalist,” continued Herry.

Herry continued his struggle to get a scholarship to study at Hiroshima University, Japan. He explained that he obtained the scholarship information through one of the alumni of Chemistry Education, who also studied at Hiroshima University.

“I got this information on scholarships in Japan from alumni of Chemistry Education who also studied at Hiroshima University. This scholarship award is focused on the issue of city recovery after the nuclear accident in Fukushima City. There are three approaches used, namely health, social, and environmental. The field of chemistry is included in the environmental approach,” explained Herry.

Herry also explained the preparation process for this scholarship selection. “There are three kinds of test processes, namely paper presentations, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and interviews. The selection of paper presentations was prepared in one day and presented in front of ten professors of Hiroshima University, FGD selection and interviews were conducted on research discussions. Tips for participating in FGDs are to actively participate in discussions but also not to dominate too much,” explained Herry.

The alumni sharing activity ended with a question and answer session between the speakers and the audience.
