FKIP – Editorial Team of the Journal of Language, Literature, and Its Teaching (Basastra) Study Program (Prodi) Indonesian Language and Literature Education (PBSI) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a Training on Using the Turnitin Test Application on Saturday (12/3/2022). The training was held online through the Zoom Meeting application.

The Basastra Journal is a journal published by the PBSI FKIP UNS Study Program in collaboration with the Association of Indonesian Language and Literature Lecturers (ADOBSI). Published twice a year in April and October (ISSN 2302-6405), the Basastra Journal contains scientific articles on language, literature, and their relation to the teaching and learning of literature. The article includes analysis, study, application of theory, research results, and literature discussion.

When contacted by the FKIP Journalists Team on Saturday (12/3/2022), Dr. Sumarwati, M.Pd. as the Editor in Chief of the Basastra Journal explained that this training aims to improve the competence of editors in conducting plagiarism tests.

“Training on the use of the Turnitin Test Application held by the Basastra Journal Team has the aim of increasing the competence of editors in conducting plagiarism tests, especially on articles published by the Basastra Journal. Thus, it is hoped that the competence of the editor will be sufficient so that it can improve the quality assurance of the articles,” explained Dr. Sumarwati.

Opened by Dr. Atikah Anindyarini, S.S., M. Hum. as the chief executive, the training presented 1 resource person. Meanwhile, the resource persons are Dr. Moh Salimi, S.Pd., M.Pd. He is a Lecturer in the Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program (PGSD) FKIP UNS and the Editor of the Dwika Cendekia Journal.

In the training, he presented material entitled “Use of Turnitin in Journal Management”. In his presentation, he explained about plagiarism in publications, general introduction to Turnitin, Turnitin account creation, Turnitin class creation, and how to do the Turnitin Test.

In his introduction, he explained that the publication process must adhere to the rules or ethics of publication, one of which is free of plagiarism. He explained that plagiarism in publications can be identified using the Turnitin Test.

“Free of plagiarism, there are at least two important things. They must include the source of reference and the proportion of citations is considered reasonable. Usually, to see the proportion of citations using a tool that measures plagiarism. One of the tools is Turnitin.com which produces similarity. Each journal has a stipulation on the amount , the average is between 10 and 30%,” explained Dr. Salimi.

Then, the activity continued with training on account creation and Turnitin classes as well as how to test plagiarism using Turnitin. Dr. Salimi guides account creation based on guidelines issued by UNS. The guide can be accessed via https://library.uns.ac.id/using-research-tool/#turnitin.

The Turnitin Test Application Usage Training held by the Basastra Journal Editorial Team ended with a question and answer session and documentation.
