FKIP – Two students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta provide assistance to the Indonesian Language program for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) at Thammasat University, Thailand, from Monday (7/3/2022) to Friday (6/5/2022). They are Akhmad Mukhibun and Pandan Arum Ayu Damayanti.

The mentoring activity is a form of collaboration between UNS and Thammasat University, Thailand. Before providing assistance, they go through a series of selection stages. These stages are administrative selection, interview selection, and reception and acceptance by Thammasat University, Thailand.

When contacted by a team of journalists from FKIP UNS, Wednesday (30/3/2022), Akhmad conveyed his impressions during the mentoring. He said that the mentoring was an extraordinary experience.

“This mentoring is an extraordinary experience because the enthusiasm of students in Thailand to learn Indonesian is high. It was also fun talking to the Thammasat students. Moreover, Thammasat is one of the best and oldest universities in Thailand. In addition, we also get hands-on experience in teaching BIPA, know the difficulties of foreign students in learning Indonesian, and can exchange cultures with them,” said Akhmad.

At the same time, Pandan explained that in implementing the BIPA assistance, they had four main tasks.

“So, we have four tasks during this assistance. The four tasks are to help Dr. Hamam Supriyadi as a BIPA lecturer at Thammasat University, introduce Indonesian culture to Thammasat University students, apply Thammasat University teaching practices with various methods that have been taught by previous BIPA teachers, and assist Thammasat University students who have learning difficulties related to the material that has been delivered during the lesson, “explained Pandan.

Pandan hopes that the BIPA program can help the process of internationalizing the Indonesian language. According to him, the global Indonesian language will open profitable cooperation with other countries.

“I hope that the BIPA program can be taught more broadly to various countries around the world because BIPA teaching can accelerate the massive and organized acceleration of the internationalization of the Indonesian language. If more foreigners are familiar with the Indonesian language and culture, the easier it will be for us to communicate and work with them in various positive and beneficial ways,” Pandan hoped.

At the end of the interview, Akhmad advised not to be afraid to try new things because opportunities do not come twice. He also advised the public to always prioritize the Indonesian language, preserve regional languages, and master foreign languages.

“Don’t be afraid to try new things because opportunities don’t come twice. Let’s identify and follow what the BIPA program is so that we can learn new things, especially in terms of language. Prioritize Indonesian, preserve regional languages, and master foreign languages,” said Akhmad.
