FKIP – Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta students who are members of the 135 Real Work Lecture (KKN) group carry out integrated waste management assistance and community empowerment. This mentoring activity was carried out in the community of Maospati Village, Magetan Regency. This mentoring activity was chaired by Syaiful Arga Nugroho, an English Education Student at FKIP UNS and supervised by Dr. Emi Widiyanti, S.P., M.Sc., lecturer of Agricultural Extension and Communication Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture (FP) UNS.

Meanwhile, members of the UNS 135 KKN group, namely Salma Nailatul Muna (International Relations), Firda Dwita Putri (Chemical Engineering), Galuh Ruhmayanti Suwito (Industrial Engineering), Natasha Nancy (Environmental Science), Gerardus Dimas Febryanto (International Relations), Vira Ainu Rifa’ (Environmental Science), Alyssa Nia Lutfia Sadono (DKV), Teo Mahatmana Ksatria Mukti (English Education), and Monica Tashya (Chemical Engineering).

The work program carried out in this KKN activity is in the form of socialization of integrated waste management. This work program was carried out in collaboration with the Sweeping Universe Waste Bank in Magetan. This collaboration was established to provide socialization to residents about the importance of good waste sorting and management. The socialization was held in conjunction with the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) event for each RW in Maospati Village, Magetan.

Syaiful Arga Nugroho, the head of the KKN 135 group, said that the reason for choosing this work program was because the TPS in Maospati Village were not optimal.

“The reason for implementing the integrated waste management program is that the existing waste disposal sites (TPS) are not optimally utilized. The 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) TPS in the village are not well managed. In addition, the lack of awareness of residents helping each other to overcome the waste problem in the village made us decide to carry out this work program,” explained Syaiful to the fkip.uns.ac.id team on Monday (28/02/2020).

This work program is intended to educate the public about the importance of sorting waste.

“We want to educate the public about the importance of proper waste sorting, good and efficient waste management, the role and function of waste banks, as well as processing waste into new valuable goods such as ecobricks which can later be converted into goods of economic value, such as ecobrick chairs,” he continued. Syaiful.

Syaiful also explained his impressions and feelings about implementing this KKN program.

“This KKN activity gives us a lot of knowledge that we don’t get in lectures. By being directly in the community, we gain valuable and useful experience to prepare ourselves to be ready to enter the community in the future, “said Syaiful.

At the end of the interview, Syaiful expressed his hopes for the future.

“We hope that what we have given to Maospati Village can be accepted and applied well by the community. We also hope that people can see waste from a different perspective, namely by seeing waste as an item that can be recycled and has economic value,” he concluded.
