The International Contemporary Calligraphy Exhibition is an event organized by the Jakarta Islamic Center for Islamic Studies and Development (Jakarta Islamic Centre). This exhibition carries the title “The Power of the Qur’an” with the hope of being able to move change for the better with the Koran, both nationally and internationally.

This exhibition was attended by 102 artists from 26 countries. These countries are Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Iran, Tunisia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iraq, Algeria, Lebanon, Pakistan, Morocco, China, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Britain, America, Syria, Bahrain, Uzbekistan, Libya, Yemen, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.

Kharisma Nuril Adha, a student of the Fine Arts Education Study Program, had the opportunity to be one of the artists representing Indonesia in this exhibition. He presented a work entitled “Heart of the Koran”.

“The contemporary calligraphy painting that I display at this exhibition is entitled ‘Heart of the Koran’ which is the name of Surah Yasin. The concept of calligraphy painting takes the first two verses of Q.S. Yasin with a size of 80x60cm. The visualization of the painting showing the temple’s relief style and traditional nuance means that the surah has a special position in the life traditions of some Muslims in Indonesia,” explained Kharisma when interviewed by the fkip.uns.ac.id team on Tuesday (3/4/2022).

When interviewed, Kharisma expressed his pleasure to be able to join this exhibition.

“I feel very grateful and very happy to be able to participate in international exhibitions, and I never expected my calligraphy work entitled “Heart of the Koran” to pass the curation or selection of works for the international exhibition. Besides that, being able to join and participate in international exhibitions is my dream,” said Kharisma.

Kharisma explained that he got the initial information from one of his lecturers.

“I got info on this exhibition from one of my lecturers, Mr. Nanang Yulianto, S.Pd., M.Ds. Detailed information about all the requirements of the work was told by his friend. Indeed, he is one of the lecturers who likes to encourage and support his students to continue to work and the spirit to make achievements, “said Kharisma.

At the end, Kharisma expressed his joy at being able to join artists from various countries.

“I don’t know how to express my feelings, because I feel like I’m still a junior when my work has to be among the works of world-class contemporary calligraphy masters and artists. The moment to be able to exhibit with them is something that is very valuable in my record of life and is a motivation to continue to be enthusiastic about producing more creative and interesting ideas in the field of calligraphy,” concluded Kharisma.
