FKIP – Masters (S-2) English Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a webinar on writing and publishing journal articles on Thursday (28/4/2022). Themed “Writing for Publication in Language and Literacy Education: Editor’s Voice”, the activity was held online through the Zoom Meeting application.

Moderated by Mutia Hasymi as a student of the S-2 English Education Study Program, FKIP UNS, this webinar presented a resource person. The resource person is Dr. Lynde Tan. He is a lecturer at Western Sydney University, Australia. In addition, he is also on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy (JAAL) and E-Learning and Digital Media.

In the webinar, he explained several material points related to the theme “Writing for Publication in Language and Literacy Education: Editor’s Voice”. These material points include the reasons for the importance of publishing journal articles, places for publication of journal articles, types of journals, and several considerations that must be made in choosing a journal.

Then, he also explained tips on writing abstracts, cover letters, and manuscripts as well as ethics and the results of journal article publications. In his presentation, Dr. Lynde presented six reasons why the manuscript was rejected by the reviewer.

“There are several reasons why manuscripts are rejected by reviewers, including because they are outside or inappropriate from the focus and scope of the journal, word count exceeds the limit, poor writing format, no study review, weak methodology and analysis, excessive claims and lack of evidence. in research, and the overall quality of writing is not yet qualified,” said Dr. Lynde.

Furthermore, he advised if the article was rejected by the reviewer, then use the feedback provided as a reference in improving the article. Then, the corrected writing can be sent back to other journals.

“If your manuscript is rejected, don’t take it to heart. You can use the feedback you receive to improve your writing. Then, you can resubmit to the same journal if possible or another suitable journal while considering journal accreditation and making sure that the journal is reputable,” said Dr. Lynde.

The activity ended with a question and answer session and documentation.
