FKIP – Community Service Team Natural Products Research Group, Molecular Engineering, and Chemistry Learning The Chemical Education Study Program of the Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta carried out assistance in the production of hand sanitizers containing the bioactive compound zerumbon from lempuyang emprit essential oil and marketing it through digital marketing.
This assistance is carried out at UKM (Small and Medium Enterprises) Suti Sehati which is located at RT 02 RW 01 Pengkol Village, Kec. Nguter Kab. Sukoharjo, Central Java. The mentoring lasts for 10 months, namely March 2022-December 2022.
The team is led by Dr. Sri Retno Dwi Ariani, S.Si., M.Sc. with members of Dr.rer.nat. Sri Mulyani, S.Si., M.Sc., Dr. Elfi Susanti VH, S.Si., M.Sc., Dr. Suryadi Budi Utomo, S.Si., M.Sc., and Dr. Muhammad Hizbul Wathon, S.Pd., M.Sc. In addition, there are 3 members from students, namely Aufa Vib Mitsalina, Agustin Wulandari, and Anastasia Diaz Pramesti.
This assistance was motivated by the community’s demand for herbal hand sanitizers which increased during the pandemic at UKM Suti Sehati. This was conveyed by Dr. Sri Retno when interviewed by the fkip.uns.ac.id team on Tuesday (19/7/2022).
“Suti Sehati UKM is a Herbal UKM owned by Mrs. Suti Parto Wiyono which has experienced increased development even during the Covid-19 pandemic. Several distributors of SME customers, Suti Sehati, asked for a supply of hand sanitizer containing herbs because it was believed that other additional benefits were beneficial for the skin compared to hand sanitizers containing only chemicals. Then, the essential oil of lempuyang emprit rhizome contains the bioactive compound zerumbon which is efficacious as an antioxidant, anti-skin cancer, antibacterial, tinea versicolor, and ringworm medicine,” explained Dr. Sri Retno.
Based on the facts in the field, several problems were found including the unavailability of industrial-scale steam-water distillation equipment, the existing human resources do not understand how to produce essential oil for lempuyang emprit rhizome and have not been able to use the oil as a hand sanitizer, and product marketing assistance is still needed through digital marketing.
This assistance begins with carrying out program socialization and coordination, implementing appropriate technology introductions, counseling and assistance in making hand sanitizers, product marketing assistance through digital marketing, and ending with an evaluation of the program’s success.
From the assistance that has been carried out, Dr. Sri Retno hopes that this activity can bring benefits, both for UKM Suti Sehati and for the team.
“For SMEs, this assistance makes human resources there have the ability to produce lempuyang emprit rhizome essential oil, the ability to produce hand sanitizers containing lempuyang emprit rhizome essential oil containing zerumbon, expand the market, and increase the income of SMEs. For the team, this assistance is a means to implement research results, one of the contributions to the welfare of the nation, and to increase relationships,” concluded Dr. Sri Retno.
