FKIP – English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta in collaboration with the English Subject Teachers’ Consultation (MGMP) for SMP in Sukoharjo Regency has held Technical Guidance (Bimtek) with the theme ” Self Assessment and Peer Assessment Facilitated by Technology”. Through the Community Service Team chaired by Dr. Nur Arifah Drajati M.Pd., the activity was held on Tuesday (5/5/2022).

Taking place at SMP Negeri 2 Nguter, Sukoharjo, the activity was narrated by Dr. Nur Arifah herself. In addition, this event was also attended by teachers who are members of the English MGMP SMP Sukoharjo Regency and a community service team consisting of Lecturers, Master’s Students (S-2), and also Undergraduate Students (S-1) English Language Education FKIP UNS.

When delivering the material, Dr. Nur Arifah explained several important points regarding the importance of self-assessment in the learning process. One of them is to give students more freedom and independence in the learning environment.

He added that self-assessment can encourage student involvement with formative assessment cycles, create a student-centered learning atmosphere, and develop student assessment skills.

Then, Dr. Nur Arifah explained the benefits of technology-based peer assessment. In addition to allowing students to correct their work, peer assessment serves to help improve students’ critical thinking skills. Quoting from Topping (2018), Dr. Nur Arifah said that peer assessment involves 3 things.

“The peer assessment process involves 3 things. The three things are communication, organization, and paying attention to the active involvement of friends,” said Dr. Nur Arifah.

Furthermore, he added that the peer assessment process helps identify students’ strengths and weaknesses, determine corrective actions and improve their skills.

“In this peer-assessment process, students help each other identify their strengths and weaknesses. In addition, they can define target areas for corrective action and develop metacognitive, personal and other professional skills.”

Other service teams also added material related to the process of conducting self-assessment and peer assessment to provide an overview to the teachers who were present at the event.
