FKIP – Center for Disaster Studies (PSB) Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Increasing Community Capacity in Facing Drought Disasters on Monday (18/7/2022). The activity was held offline in Girikikis Village, Giriwoyo District, Wonogiri Regency.
Chaired by Dr. Pipit Wijayanti, S.Si., M.Sc., the team consisted of Prof. Dr. Chatarina Muryani, M.Sc. and Lintang Ronggowulan, S.Pd., M.Pd. They are Lecturers of the Geography Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS. This activity was attended by village officials, youth organizations, members of Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK), and 20 Heads of Neighborhood Associations (RT) in Girikikis Village. Participants who take part in this activity will later be involved in mobilizing other communities to maintain and manage karst areas.
Prior to the FGD, the UNS LPPM PSB Team conducted data mining on the community’s initial capacity level through open interviews. Then, the FGD began with providing material related to the karst ecosystem, karst hydrology, and conservation of karst areas.

The activity was followed by a discussion with participants related to drought, karst pollution, as well as conservation and adaptation. The activity then ended with the installation of signs prohibiting the dumping of garbage in the sinkhole which became the entrance of water to the karst hydrological system. This is intended so that people do not throw garbage in the sinkhole so that the quality of the groundwater in the karst is not polluted.
Contacted by the journalist team at fkip.uns.ac.id, Dr. Pipit said that this activity aims to increase public knowledge about spring conservation. Thus, the community will have an awareness of the importance of participation in spring conservation and changes in land use patterns that are better and more appropriate.
“This activity has the aim of increasing public knowledge in Girikikis Village regarding spring conservation. By having knowledge about spring conservation, they will have an awareness of the importance of participation in spring conservation. In addition, it will also allow changes in land use patterns in a better and more appropriate direction,” said Dr. Pipit.
At the end of the interview session, Dr. Pipit hopes that this FGD activity will make people who live in karst areas aware to protect their environment from mining and garbage. By maintaining the karst area, the need for clean water will be met.
“We hope that this activity will make people who live in the karst area aware, especially in the Girikikis Village, to protect the environment from mining and garbage. Because activities that do not show concern for the karst area will become a very big loss later. Especially for the fulfillment of clean water,” hope Dr. Pipit.
