FKIP – Research Group (RG) Science and its Learning Study Program (Prodi) S1 Natural Science Education (IPA) Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a Community Service event with the theme “Assistance in the Preparation of Ethno-STEM-Based Learning Tools for Karanganyar Regency Science Teacher” in Building A 2nd Floor FKIP UNS (Monday, 27/06/2022).

The Community Service Program was opened by the chairman of the Science and Learning Research Group, Prof. Dr. Suciati, M.Pd accompanied by RG members, namely Febriani Sarwendah Asri Nugraheni, M.Pd., Bayu Antrakusuma, M.Pd., Meida Wulan Sari, M.Pd., Icha Kurnia Wati, M.Pd., Dyah Fitriana Masithoh , M.Si., and Dr. Bramastia, M.Pd.

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Suciati, M.Pd as the Chair of the Science and Learning Research Group (RG) stated that this community service event was carried out for several reasons, one of which was the increasingly complex problems in the world of education.

“Complex problems in education require multidisciplinary problem solving, for example, environmental problems can be viewed from biological, physical, and so on, so that to solve problems, technology participation is needed and requires calculations, namely through the help of mathematics,” explained Prof. Holy.

Then, Prof. Suciati explained the second reason, namely because Indonesia is a multi-ethnic country. “This multiethnic should be seen as a form of wealth for all of us. The wealth that exists today can be used as teaching materials that come from the integration of the potential that is around it. For example, local wisdom, starting to make bricks, or making food tape to be analyzed in learning. This is where we can learn about how to integrate ethnoscience into learning and how to insert local wisdom into learning. So that all of you can apply ethnoscience in learning, improve teacher competence professionally and socially so that they can interact with all lines,” he explained.

“Today’s event is at least a bridge for lecturers to assist science teachers in Karanganyar Regency in compiling ethno-STEM-based learning tools “explained Prof. Holy.

After the remarks were completed, the activity continued with assistance in the preparation of ethno-STEM-based learning tools for science teachers in the Karanganyar district, which was guided by Febriani Sarwendah Asri Nugraheni, M.Pd. as a lecturer in S1 Science Education FKIP UNS.

The teachers were guided on how to prepare an ethno-STEM-based lesson plan, starting from what aspects of basic competencies they wanted to teach, how to describe indicators in detail, and sorting indicators into components of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Next, assistance is provided on how to understand the problem to be raised in learning, what work to ask students to do, or what outcomes are expected from this activity. Febriani Sarwendah also guides about what culture you want to be associated with in learning, and what cultural components are most prominent to convey to students.

After the mentoring event for the preparation of the ethno-STEM-based lesson plans was completed, the event was closed by the Chairperson of the Science and Learning Research Group (RG). The hope is that after participating in this mentoring, in the future teachers can realize it in their respective schools,” concluded Prof Dr. Suciati, M.Pd.
