FKIP – Student Activity Unit (UKM) Regional Arts Development Unit (UPKD) Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held the Gambyong Pareanom Classical Dance Competition on Thursday (21/7/2022). This competition is held offline at Pendhapa R. Ng. Yasadipura Center for Excellence in Science and Technology (PUI) Javanology UNS. This competition is one of a series of 2022 Cultural Week events.
The Cultural Week is one of the annual work programs that carry the theme according to the specialization in UPKD, namely acting, music, and dance. The implementation of this year’s cultural week carries the theme “Dance”. This activity is held to preserve regional culture. This was conveyed by Arzon Jauris Saputro as chairman of the committee.
“The main goal is to preserve regional culture, especially Javanese dance. Moreover, by holding a classical dance competition, we can explore the potential of the participants because the participants who come from are high school / vocational students, university students, and groups of dance activists,” explained Arzon on Wednesday (27/7/2022).
Participants who took part in this activity were high school/vocational high school students throughout the Surakarta Residency and students or the general public.
In this competition, Darmasti, S.Kar., M.Hum., as a Lecturer of the Dance Study Program (Prodi) of the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Surakarta, Dorothea Quin Haryati, S.Sn. from Moncar Iswara Studio and Lukman Affandi, S.Pd., as UPKD alumni.
The winners of the student/general category were Semarak Candra Kirana, the Traditional Arts Coordinating Board (BKKT) UNS, and the Surakarta Style Javanese Arts Unit (UKJGS) UGM. While the categories of SMA/K students are SMAN 3 Surakarta, SMAN 1 Kartasura, and SMAN 1 Karanganyar.
Arzon explained that the participants who took part in this competition were very enthusiastic.
“Participants are very enthusiastic in participating in this event, seen from the large number of participants who register,” explained Arzon.
In the end, Arzon expressed his hope for holding this competition.
“This event can be a vehicle for introducing UPKD. UPKD is a UKM in the arts. With this event, I hope that all participants will continue to preserve regional arts,” concluded Arzon.
