FKIP — Master Study Program (S-2) Biology Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a public lecture activity with the theme “Lesson Study an Japanese: Board Writing Pedagogy” on Saturday (19/11/2022). This webinar was held online through the Zoom Meeting application.

This webinar was opened directly by the Deputy Dean for Academic, Research, and Student Affairs of FKIP UNS, Prof. Dr. Slamet Subiyantoro, M.Sc. In his remarks, he said that this activity could become an arena for research collaboration and student mobility at the international level. He hopes this activity can improve the quality and quality of education.


“We express our gratitude and appreciation for organizing this public lecture activity. Public lectures on an international scale like this are one of the activities that can increase research collaboration and student mobility at the international level. We are sure that the activities this morning will be full of knowledge and learning. We also hope that this activity can improve the quality and quality of UNS institutions, FKIP UNS, and especially for the Masters in Biology Education Study Program,” hoped Prof. Slamet.

Moderated by Murni Ramli, S.S., M.Sc., Ed.D. as a Lecturer in Biology Education at UNS, this webinar presented a resource person. She is Dr. Shirley Tan. She is a Lecturer at Nagoya University, Japan. She presented material entitled “Crafting Pedagogies Through Lesson Study and Bansho”. She began to present the material by explaining the conditions that support teacher development.

“There are several conditions for teacher development, including providing learning opportunities from teachers through experience and external sources. Next, the two things are combined. Learning from the teacher’s experience is placed as the main axis and is supported by external sources,” said Dr. Shirley.


Then she also explained the learning objectives, an overview of lesson study and Bansho, the application of lesson study and Bansho in Japan, to how to design lesson study and Bansho. At the end of her presentation, she emphasized that the most important thing in using lesson study and Bansho is the significance and importance of the work board.

“One of the most important things I’ve learned through using lesson study and Bansho is the significance and importance of board work because thinking about and planning board work has changed the way I think about teaching and student learning plans,” explained Dr. Sherly.
