FKIP – Science Education Student Association (HIMADIKPA) Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a graphic design training with the theme “Starting from the Basics, Realizing Visual Communication Aesthetics”. This training was carried out online through Zoom Meetings and the HIMADIKPA FKIP UNS Youtube channel on Sunday (23/10/2022).

This training presented Muttaqin Hidayatullah as the founder of @creativsigner as a speaker and moderated by Khoirul Nur Adhi. In this training, Muttaqin discussed the importance of learning and understanding design skills in the digital era, getting to know the world of graphic design and its foundations, understanding about color and typography and their application, getting to know the world of carousels, and tips on making them good.

According to Muttaqin, apart from being able to be learned by everyone, there are four reasons why it is important to learn graphic design skills. The four reasons are graphic design is an ability that is needed by almost everyone in the digital era as it is now, graphic design is a place to manage roles, ideas, and creativity in an interesting way in the digital era, graphic design is the main gate that attracts other people’s interest in the digital era. , and graphic design is a means of communicating bridges to other people without having to speak directly.

“This design skill can be learned by everyone, a hard skill that can be learned. Graphic design is also one that boosts people’s interest to glance at our content or information that we will post on social media later,” he said.

Muttaqin explained that graphic design is not just a logo, poster, or banner, but the art of communication using visual combination techniques such as typography, photography, and illustrations to convey a certain role or purpose. So there are many branches in graphic design, namely visual identity, advertising, social media, publications, websites, UI design, packaging, and presentations.

Furthermore, Muttaqin explained four mistakes that are often made by beginners in making designs, namely too many ornaments in the design, using too many fonts in the design, choosing colors or fonts that collide (lack of contrast), and not leaving empty space in the design. In addition, he also explains the simple steps in making an attractive design, such as understanding the message information in the design and knowing who the target is, applying the foundations in the design so that the results are maximized, understanding the personality of color and typography, then paying attention to its application, and adjusting design elements starting with from colors, fonts, images, and supporting ornaments to the message and design target.

Before proceeding with the demonstration of making a carousel design in the Canva application, Muttaqin explained about eight things that must be considered when designing a carousel, namely determining the discussion of the carousel, preparing the points to be included, using a title that makes people curious, simple and simple, pay attention to the layout ornament, use fonts and colors that are easy to read and see, add images in each point of information, and add a call to action.

“In the end, we make words that are continuous with the content we discuss so that there will be interactions, it’s useless if we make content without interaction, so on the last slide it’s usually words that are continuous with the content,” he explained.
