FKIP – Association of Alumni Doctoral Program (S-3) Indonesian Language Education ( PBI) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held International Conference of Humanities and Social Science (ICHSS). This conference is entitled “Freedom to Learn in Education, Social, Religious, Culture, and Language Perspective”. The activity was carried out online on Saturday (17/12/2022).
This activity presented three key speakers, namely Indriya L. Sukmono, Ph.D., as a Lecturer in Indonesian Studies at Yale University, New Heaven, USA; Yacinta Kurniasih, Ph.D. (cand)., as a lecturer in Indonesian studies at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia; and Dr. Uswatun Hasanah, M.Pd., as the Head of the Education and Culture Office of Central Java Province, Indonesia.
The activity began with remarks from the Head of the Indonesian Language Education Doctoral Study Program; Prof. Dr. Andayani, M.Pd. In his remarks, he said that this conference was expected to be able to discuss urgent issues in the social and humanities sector.
“So, the international conference held by the Alumni of the UNS Indonesian Language Education Doctoral Program is titled “ICHSS 2”. In 2021, “ICHSS 1″ was held. The total number of participants was 272 people, consisting of lecturers from various universities. The output of this international conference is international indexed proceedings with the reputation of EAI-EUDL (European Alliance for Innovation from the European Union Digital Library). Also, this activity is expected to give birth to the latest ideas in the field of social and humanities,” explained Prof. Andayani.


Indriya L. Sukmono, Ph.D., in his presentation, explained “The Rise and Fall of Indonesian Language Learning for Foreign Speakers (BIPA).”
“BIPA learning at Yale University, America has been going on for a long time. Generally, BIPA students take Indonesian language classes in semesters 1-3. BIPA students are generally at the S-1 (Undergraduate)_. However, the Indonesian language poses great challenges in the Americas. This is because students tend to learn more popular foreign languages, such as Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, and Arabic,” explained Indriya Ph.D.
The next presentation was delivered by Yacinta Kurniasih, Ph.D. (cand)., from Monash University. He conveyed the idea of “Globalizing Indonesian? The World Needs Indonesian! An Independent Learning Mission”
“The role of the Indonesian language as the most important part in the implementation of Independent Learning concerning government programs in the education system (independence curriculum). Globalizing the Indonesian language can be done by using the Indonesian language in international political forums, having an Indonesian diaspora (research, connections, participation), research on BIPA, using Indonesian through product promotion, increasing confidence in Indonesian, and increasing cooperation through language diplomacy. ,” explained Yucinta Kurniasih, Ph.D. (cand).

Then, the third speaker namely Dr. Uswatun Hasanah, M.Pd., explained the material entitled “The Important Role of Indonesian Literacy in Series 22 Merdeka Belajar.”
“Indonesian literacy is one of the components in the selection to enter higher education. This literacy concept relates to an individual’s ability to use all of his potentials to solve existing problems so that literacy is not limited to reading and writing abilities. There are three characteristics of a person having good literacy (literacy), namely having an adaptive life, having the ability to make a positive contribution, and having solutive benefits,” explained Dr. Uswatun Hasanah.
At the end of the keynote speaker’s presentation, a question and answer session and discussion opened. The activity was continued with a parallel trial by accompanying speakers in the zoom breakout room.
