FKIP — Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held a drama performance which is commonly known as “Directional Performance” on Wednesday (14/12/ 2022). This performance was held at the Central Java Cultural Park Arena Theater (TA TBJT), Surakarta City.

The directing performance is a drama staging event that is routinely held by the PBSI Study Program FKIP UNS every year. This performance was carried out by 5th semester students of PBSI FKIP UNS as a product of the Directing course. In 2022, the performance will be held by the Kendil Theater, PBSI Study Program, FKIP UNS.

Preparation for the performance is carried out for one semester or approximately four months from September to December. In the preparation process, they were accompanied by a lecturer for Directing PBSI FKIP UNS, namely Budi Waluyo, S.S., M.Pd. and Dr. Sugit Zulianto, M.Pd. After being given an introduction by the two lecturers, they prepared the performance independently by forming an organization of activities in the form of a production team to role players for the performance but with supervision and escort from the supporting lecturer.

Contacted by the fkip.uns.ac.id journalist team on Wednesday (11/1/2023), Andrian Febrianto as the Director of Directing 2022 Production said that this directing stage aims to hone students’ interests, talents and skills in the field of drama arts.

“In general, this performance aims to hone students’ interests, talents and skills in the field of drama arts, especially because this is from the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program which is still relevant to this matter. Apart from that, this activity also aims to introduce the Directing course with the real practice of organizing a drama performance,” explained Andrian.

The theme for the 2022 Directing Stage is “Katastrofe: Concerning Nyai, All Honor, and Her Legitimacy”. Catastrophe means catastrophe, calamity, or catastrophe. They adopted this theme because it relates to the script that was being delivered, namely Nyai Ontosoroh by R. Giryadi which was adapted from the Novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. In this script, Sanikem as the main character must accept the destiny of being a concubine at a young age and must live a life full of injustice. Therefore, this catastrophe is an allegory and symbol of the story of Sanikem or Nyai Ontosoroh.

On the same occasion, Andrian also explained the reasons for selecting the manuscript.

“We chose this script because the story is quite interesting and is based on a well-known novel. The value contained therein is also the reason we chose this text, where this script teaches the tenacity of a woman in defending her honor. Technically, by choosing this script, the players’ needs in the performance can be fulfilled,” said Andrian.

At the end of the interview session, Andrian expressed his hopes for this directing stage.

“We hope that all the shortcomings and evaluations of this performance can be a separate record for our juniors so they can hold the next performance even better. This performance must continue because it can be an opportunity to show that the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program FKIP UNS is committed to preserving the arts and a place for students to express themselves through art,” hoped Andrian.
