FKIP – Doctoral Program (S-3) Indonesian Language Education (PBI) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a Workshop on Compilation of Thematic Digital Comics to Educate Self-Confidence Character for Elementary School (SD) Students on Wednesday (14/06/2023). The activity was held offline at the Surakarta City Education Office.

This activity is a collaboration between the PBI Doctoral Program FKIP UNS, the UNS Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), and the Surakarta City Education Office.

Three presenters, namely Pof, filled out this activity. Dr. Andayani, M.Pd. as the Head of the UNS PBI Doctoral Program, Dr. Veronika Unun, M.Pd. as a Lecturer at Bantara Sukoharjo Veterans University (Univet), and Lalita Gilang, S.Sn., M.Ds. as a Lecturer in the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) UNS.

The Head of the Surakarta City Elementary School Education Division, Tarno, S.Pd., M.Pd., opened the activity. He hopes that this activity can improve teacher competence in preparing instructional media.

“This training activity is expected to increase teacher competence in making learning media, especially to improve the character of post-pandemic student self-confidence,” hoped Tarno.

The activity continued with the presentation of material by Dr. Veronika with material entitled The Role of Stories in Character Education for Elementary School Children. In his presentation, he said that stories and examples were the most effective media for instilling character education.

“The most effective character education is done through stories and examples. This is because early childhood cannot think abstractly, so learning is by imitating. Therefore, the teacher must be a role model of good morals and character. Then, teachers can also use folklore to educate and build children’s character,” explained Dr. Veronika.

The activity continued with the presentation of material by Prof. Andayani who presented material entitled Confidence for Students. In this presentation, he explained several conditions for students who needed more confidence.

“Some of the conditions currently experienced by students are that students feel insecure about themselves. For example, students are awkward when dealing with other people, students are afraid to speak, students find it difficult to convey the conditions they face, withdraw, and hesitate. Parents and teachers should immediately address this. What can be done is to bring courage to students with piety and gratitude to God, students are trained to have the courage to express their opinions using language, students are always trained to appear neat and good,” explained Prof. Andayani.

Furthermore, the material was continued with the delivery of material by Lalita Gilang, S.Sn., M.Ds., with material entitled Creating Comic Strips. He describes the flow of creating comic strips using the Canva application.

“In creating comic strips, teachers can use Canva in making them. The order of manufacture, namely, the teacher can make a storyline, then a storyboard, and finish. Creating storylines or moments that will appear in comics. Making storyboards or pictures according to the moments, dialogues, and characters that must appear. For finishing, it can be in the form of coloring,” explained Lalita.

The activity continued with the practice of making comics by workshop participants and questions and answers.
