FKIP – Research Group Team (RG) for Science and History Learning Study Program (Prodi) History Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a Workshop on Utilization of Primary Resources in Learning History of the Independent Curriculum. The workshop is part of a series of UNS Community Service (PKM) activities in 2023.
The RG Scientific and Historical Study Team is chaired by Prof. Dr. Sariyatun, M.Pd., M.Hum. with Prof. Dr. Leo Agung S., M.Pd., Dr. Akhmad Arif Musadad, M.Pd., Drs. Tri Yuniyanto, M.Hum., and Nur Fatah Abidin, S.Pd., M.Pd. The dedication activity on Thursday (6/7/2023) was a collaboration between the History Education Study Program FKIP UNS and the Subject Teacher Consultation (MGMP) for History SMA Kota Surakarta and the National Press Monument.
The workshop held by RG for Science and History Learning presented two speakers, namely Prof. Dr. Sariyatun, M.Pd., M.Hum. and Dani Triardana Riswara, S.Sos. moderated by Ardeti Jeni Abdila, M.Pd. As the first speaker, Prof. Dr. Sariyatun, M.Pd., M.Hum. delivered material on “Utilization of Primary Historical Resources in Learning History”. She said it is possible in the independent curriculum to carry out history lessons using primary sources.
Prof. Sariyatun presents six strategies to implement primary sources in learning, namely identifying relevant primary sources, interestingly presenting primary sources, discussing and analyzing together, inviting students to be directly involved with primary sources, project-based learning, reflection and assessment.
“There are many benefits of using primary sources in learning. It is highly recommended, especially for completing historical investigations and analyses. The use of primary sources also encourages students to think critically and be more enthusiastic in learning because it involves students in reconstructing historical events,” explained Prof. Sariyatun
The second speaker is Dani Triardana Riswara, S.Sos., an archivist of the National Press Monument. He delivered material on the topic “Digitalization of Primary Sources”. In his presentation, Dani stressed that the main task of the museum related to collections is maintenance, maintenance of collections, and management of collections.
Along with the times, there is a process of digitizing collections from museums, especially at the National Press Monument, which is carried out through several stages, such as collection selection/conservation, media transfer, data processing, database (SIDAK), and data utilization/access.
The digitization of newspapers and magazines by the National Press Monument began in 2010. Every year an average of 40,000 pages are digitized. One form of output product is data file services for newspapers and tabloids totaling 428 titles and magazines totaling 90 titles. The total collection that has been digitized is 247,830 copies of newspapers and 949 copies of magazines and 11 copies of tabloids.
The Workshop on the Utilization of Primary Resources in Learning History of the Merdeka Curriculum was attended by 40 history teachers who are members of the Surakarta City High School History MGMP. The workshop activity was closed with a Museum activity. The expected output of this activity is that teachers can compile history teaching modules based on the use of primary sources.
