FKIP – To encourage economic empowerment and the spread of knowledge, dedicated academics from the Chemistry Education Study Program (Prodi) of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta who are members of the Community Service Program (PkM) have carried out innovative entrepreneurship training through guava processing in July and August 2023. The program was held in Dukuh Village, Ngargoyoso, Karanganyar.

The PkM team is led by Dr.rer.nat. Sri Mulyani, M.Si, together with members Dr. Endang Susilowati, M.Si, Dr. M. Hizbul Wathon, M.Si., and Dr. Ari Syahidul Shidiq, M.Pd. They organized this program to increase knowledge and skills in processing guava as a creative and profitable business opportunity.

Dukuh Village is one of the quality guava-producing villages in Karanganyar Regency. However, the abundance of guava supplies in the Karanganyar area and its surroundings means that many guavas are not sold and have not been utilized properly. This gives rise to the opportunity to use processed guava that is not sold to have increased economic value. Based on the problems and potential that have been identified, the PkM Team for the Chemistry Education Study Program designed a series of workshops and training sessions to process guava into ice cream and pickled guava so that it has increased economic value.

Training sessions cover a variety of topics. The PkM Team for the Chemistry Education Study Program guided the making of red guava and crystal guava ice cream. They also ensure they gain hands-on experience in production, packaging, and marketing. To improve learning accessibility and retention, the team also created video tutorials that can be accessed online, allowing participants to repeat the learning process according to their needs.

This innovative approach equips people with new skills and piques their interest in exploring entrepreneurial opportunities. Through practical training, interactive discussions, and comprehensive guidance, the Chemistry Education Study Program PkM Team fostered a sense of empowerment among residents.

The workshop not only received a warm welcome but also sparked demand for similar activities in the future, demonstrating this kind of initiative’s success and sustainability potential. This is in line with what was conveyed by Dr. Sri Mulyani when contacted by the fkip.uns.ac.id Journalist Team.

“Our goal is to empower local communities with practical knowledge and skills that can positively impact their livelihoods. We are very pleased to see the enthusiasm and enthusiasm of the participants in embracing these entrepreneurial concepts,” said Dr. Sri Mulyani.

This initiative reflects UNS’s commitment to community development and the power of collaboration between the academic world and local communities. With the success of PkM, the university is proud to continue its dedication to encouraging innovation, the spread of knowledge, and sustainable economic growth.
