FKIP – The Education Technology Education Study Program (Prodi), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a guest lecture and research collaboration with Monash University lecturers. This activity was held offline in two consecutive days, namely on Wednesday (06/19/2024) and Thursday (06/20/2024). The first activity, a guest lecture, took place in the Hall of Building F FKIP UNS.
The series of activities were opened directly by the Dean of FKIP UNS, Prof. Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si., and the Head of the S-1 Educational Technology Study Program, Dr. Eka Budhi Santoso, M.Pd. In his speech, Dr. Eka Budhi expressed his appreciation for the implementation of the Inbound Visiting Program and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FKIP UNS and Monash University.
“Through this mutually agreed MoU, it signifies a commitment to a collaborative partnership that aims to improve the quality of education, foster an international academic environment, offer more international experiences to students, and enhance our research capabilities. We hope that these activities will enable us to jointly improve the quality of education at both institutions, create a vibrant international academic atmosphere, and provide a broader cross-cultural experience to our students,” said Dr. Eka Budhi Santoso, M.Pd.
The activity which was held as a series of academic activities in the framework of the Inbound Visiting Proseffor Program presented a guest speaker as a guest lecturer from Monash University, Australia, namely Dr. Raqib Chowdhury. Dr. Raqib is a lecturer from the Faculty of Education, Monash University, who is an expert in the field of education and curriculum. In the guest lecture, Dr. Raqib delivered material related to “Differentiated Instruction and Personalized Learning: The Role of Educational Technology in Optimizing Pedagogy.”
During the session, Dr. Raqib discussed the importance of differentiated instruction. The relatively heterogeneous demographic composition and diversity of students in the classroom is currently one of the challenges that teachers must face in the learning process. According to Dr. Raqib, in the classroom learning process, teachers often use a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to teach the same curriculum to all students. In reality, this produces futile results. So, in this case, differentiated learning is very important in a classroom environment with diverse students.
“Research has shown that students’ learning needs vary widely, not only because of socio-economic factors and access to technology. However, there are also significant variations in physical and learning abilities, students’ life experiences, personal interests, and different levels of readiness. Therefore, the ongoing challenge for teachers is to respond to the learning needs of each student in a way that is fair and socially just,” said Dr. Raqib.
Furthermore, after the guest lecture activity on the first day, this activity was continued with a research collaboration session with Dr. Raqib which was held in the F Building Conference Room, FKIP UNS, on (20/06/2024). This research collaboration discussion also presented Prof. Dr. Triyanti, S.H., M.Hum., as the Deputy Dean for Planning, Business Cooperation, and Information. In addition, this discussion activity was also attended by the lecturer board of the S-1 Educational Technology Study Program. In this research collaboration discussion, a workshop on research methodology or analysis tools for UNS lecturers was also held.
