FKIP – History Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has finished holding a national seminar on advanced history. This seminar was held offline on Wednesday (12/6/2024), located in the Hall of Building F 3rd Floor, FKIP UNS.

This seminar is a collaboration between the History Education Study Program and the Ganesha Study Program Student Association (HMP) which is organized as one of the national scope seminar activities. The national seminar was opened directly by the Dean of FKIP UNS, Prof. Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si., and the Head of Study Program (Kaprodi) S-1 History Education, Dr. Sutiyah, M.Pd., M.Hum. In their remarks, Prod. Dr. Mardiyana and Dr. Sutiyah expressed their gratitude for the implementation of the national seminar which can provide information related to advanced history.

“The existence of a national seminar on the question of history level in high school I think is a fairly interesting issue for us to study together with the discussions with the speakers in this seminar,” said Dr. Mardiyana.

The national seminar which took the theme “Questioning advanced history in secondary schools: the realm of curriculum and teaching and learning practices” presented 4 speakers consisting of lecturers, academics, and involved one of the students as a resource person. The speakers included Dr. Zulkarnain, M.Pd., Tsabit Azinar Ahmad, M.Pd., Dr. Sutiyah, M.Pd., M.Hum., and Syaffrina Fadhilatul N.

The first speaker, Dr. Zulkarnain, M.Pd., presented material related to efforts to strengthen the history and global perspective of students. In his material, Dr. Zulkarnain explained that the history curriculum is currently developing very dynamically along with the changing direction of education implementation policies. However, the direction of the objectives of history education has never changed, namely in order to instill nationalism, historical awareness, and comprehensive historical knowledge.

“History subjects receive an additional portion in the design of the National Curriculum to become a group of elective subjects where in the Merdeka Curriculum, History subjects are only included in the basic group subjects. In this case, advanced history is very important to train students to have a globally connected perspective,” said Dr. Zulkarnain.

Furthermore, the second speaker, Tsabit Azinar Ahmad, M.Pd., presented material related to global awareness in History Education. Tsabit explained that global history is a history that focuses on the world that is functionally interconnected in a long period of time between world communities so as to create a single interconnection. In his presentation, Tsabit also explained the importance of global history in teaching History Education, awareness of global history, and thinking skills that must be developed by students.

The third material was continued by Dr. Sutiyah, M.Pd., who explained material related to advanced history teaching and learning. In her material, Dr. Sutiyah explained the focus of material that can be delivered by teachers when providing advanced history learning in accordance with the Merdeka Curriculum. Dr. Sutiyah also explained that in learning advanced history, learning activities must be synchronized with the teaching module and in accordance with current realities.

Then, the seminar ended with the fourth material delivered by one of the History Education Study Program students, namely Syaffrina Fadhilatul. In her presentation, Syaffrina explained about advanced history in high school from a student/public perspective. According to Syaffrina, currently, history learning in secondary schools has been weakened in the Merdeka Curriculum, and there was even a discourse on the elimination of History Subjects in secondary schools.
