FKIP – Master Program in Chemistry Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held an online International Guest Lecture webinar through the Zoom Meeting application. The activity with the theme “Cognitive Conflict Strategy with Classroom Chemistry Demonstration” was opened directly by the Deputy Dean of Academic, Research, and Student Affairs FKIP UNS, Prof. Dr. Slamet Subiyantoro, M.Si. on Friday (29/10/2021).
This activity presents one speaker, namely Prof. Bob Bucat from the University of Western Australia. A total of 79 participants from various Study Programs at UNS and other universities participated in this activity.
In his speech, Dr. Sri Yamtinah, M.Pd., as the Head of the Chemistry Education Masters Study Program said that this activity was carried out in order to equip the Chemistry Education Masters Study Program students and webinar participants with knowledge about alternative learning strategies that they can apply in the classroom and contribute for the acceleration of UNS towards World Class University.
“This activity is carried out in order to equip students of the Master of Chemistry Education Study Program as well as students, as well as teachers with knowledge about alternative learning strategies that can be applied in the classroom. In addition, by presenting international speakers who have a track record of research and reputable publications, it is hoped that this activity can contribute to the acceleration of UNS towards World Class University”, said Dr. Sri.
This International Guest Lecture was divided into two activity sessions. The first session was the presentation of material from Prof. Bob Bucat for 60 minutes. The demonstration method was originally considered by some teachers to be irrelevant for 21st-century learning, but in this activity, Prof. Bob Bucat provides new insights on cognitive conflict strategies that can be combined with classroom chemistry demonstrations to create meaningful learning for students.

In his presentation, Prof. Bob Bucat also advised the participants that being a teacher needs to have the willingness and awareness to discuss with students anywhere, anytime, and with any media. According to Prof. Bob Bucat no one can replace a teacher who always wants to understand his students.
“Being a teacher requires willingness and awareness to discuss with students. You can discuss anywhere, anytime, and with any media. A teacher who always wants to understand his students cannot be replaced,” said Prof. Bob Bucat.
