FKIP – Two Informatics Engineering Education Study Program Students and Computers (PTIK) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta managed to win 1st place in the essay competition at the Democratic National Competition organized by the Student Association of Study(HMP) Civic Education (Democratia) FKIP UNS.
The Democratic National Competition is an essay competition organized by HMP Demokratia FKIP UNS. The theme of this competition is Optimizing the Role of Students in Efforts to Face the Era of Society 5.0. The competition will be held from September 29 – October 30, 2021. Winners will be announced via the Instagram social media account @hmpdemokratia on Sunday (7/11/2021).
Susanti Setiyani and Wiwin Nurhidayah took part in the competition starting from registering, followed by sending the manuscript according to the provisions via the provided google form. They use Augmented Reality (AR) card technology as a learning medium for students with special needs for the deaf.
“We propose ADREAF (Augmented Reality for The Deaf): Augmented Reality-Based Smart Learning Application for the Deaf with Earphone Hearing Integration to Face the Era of Society 5.0,” said Wiwin as a team member.
Not to forget, Wiwin also explained how to use the application proposed in this competition.
“The operating system runs the application ADREAF which is based on augmented reality. This application is based on Android so it can be accessed easily. Then, students with special needs who are deaf can choose the menu that has been provided by integrating the earphone hearing device, “explained Wiwin.
This idea was created with the background of deaf students who have limited speaking due to a lack of vocabulary and language difficulties. Learning media used by deaf students are also still limited. Along with the development of technology, AR technology can help students to visualize abstract concepts, including for students who are deaf.
Wiwin conveyed the goals the team wanted when proposing the idea of AR technology for deaf students.
“The goal is as an innovation of learning media for deaf students and as a solution to improve vocabulary, as well as language understanding to help the understanding of deaf students in receiving learning. The existence of this concept is also a form that people with disabilities can also enjoy technological developments so that there is no gap between students with special needs and students in general, “said Wiwin.
Finally, Wiwin expressed his hopes for the future.
“Hopefully we can develop existing ideas and can participate in similar activities as a form of benefiting ourselves and our surroundings,” hoped Wiwin.
