FKIP – Geography Education Student Association (HIMAGO) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education ( FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held an online discussion room titled “Deforestation Never Stops, Climate Crisis is intimidating” which was held online on Saturday (11/12/2021). This activity presented two resource persons, namely the Head of the S-1 Geography Education Study Program, FKIP UNS, Dr. Yasin Yusuf, S.Si., M.Sc. and Lecturer of the Department of Forestry Resources Conservation, Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University, Dr. Hero Marhaento, S.Hut., M.Si.

This activity is carried out to facilitate students to have a discussion room related to current issues, such as social, environmental, educational, and so on. In this activity, the topic of deforestation was chosen because there was a significant reduction in the amount of forest, which had an impact on the climate crisis.

Moderated by Geography Education 2017 student, Febian Gery Lazuardi, the activity began with the presentation of the material by the first speaker, Dr. Yasin Yusuf. In his presentation, Dr. Yasin explained the material on the analysis of deforestation in Central Kalimantan and the steps to stop it.

“The analysis of deforestation in Central Kalimantan is based on analysis spatial through Global Forest Watch and Atlas Nusantara. In addition, a review through structural analysis (economic politics or ecology): production space, planetary urbanization, growth machine, “said Dr. Yasin.

Dr. Yasin added that the problem of deforestation in Central Kalimantan is related to the current socio-political situation, such as the economic agenda, increasing land for food production, mining activities, and company activities.

Dr. Yasin also added that deforestation in Central Kalimantan was linked to the climate crisis.

“The deforestation that occurs has an impact on the climate crisis and disaster. The cause is the precisely human activity itself. The impacts that occur are large carbon contributions, forest fires, floods, and agrarian conflicts,” added Dr. Yasin.

The activity was continued with a material presentation by Dr. Hero Marhaeto. Dr. Hero explained about the Ecological Crisis Due to Climate Change and Deforestation. The presentation began with the presentation of disaster cases that occurred during 2021, such as floods, landslides, fires, and so on.

Dr. Hero continued his discussion on climate change and extreme weather in Indonesia.
“Climate changes that occur in Indonesia have an impact on increasing the earth’s temperature, seawater temperature, and the occurrence of weather extreme. One of the causes of extreme weather is deforestation,” said Dr. heroes.

Dr. Hero also emphasized the phenomenon of the climate crisis and deforestation.

“The climate crisis has a very dangerous impact on life. Likewise, the problem of land cover change (deforestation) has also entered a critical phase. Therefore, it is important to adapt and mitigate by reducing the risk of disaster sources, early warning systems, reducing disaster risk through increasing community resilience,” concluded Dr. heroes.
