FKIP – The Student Association of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (Himprobsi) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a Socialization of Language Use (Sospeba) 2022 activity on Monday (24/1/2022) in a private manner online via the Zoom Meeting application.

In his remarks, Ridwan Himawan as chairman of Himprobsi 2021 explained that Sospeba was the outcome of the Himprobsi internship process which is expected to produce qualified cadres to continue the leadership wheel in the organization going forward.

“Sospeba itself is an outcome of the Himprobsi internship process that has been carried out for one month. The internship activity is one of the efforts to prepare good student resources to turn the wheels of the organization. In addition, this activity is expected to produce qualified cadres to continue the hope -good hopes that have not been realized. Hopefully, with this event we can be infected with the spirit of productivity in working both in writing and in speech from our speakers,” explained Ridwan.

Moderated by Ivana Magdalena as a student of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI) FKIP UNS, the activity presented two speakers. The first speaker was Habib Safillah Akbariski, S.Pd. He is the Language Ambassador of the Bangka Belitung Islands in 2018 and an alumnus of PBSI FKIP UNS. He presented a material entitled “How Language Affects Human Thinking?”.

In his presentation, he explained the material about the big, deep, early, and heavy influence of language in human thought processes. According to him, language is a magical thing because it can affect the way people think.

“Language is a miracle because it can have an influence on human thought processes. Therefore, in carrying out public speaking activities we must use language that is in accordance with the rules and context. That is, we must implement good and correct language so that misunderstandings do not occur. Each region has its own language pattern which in the end affects their way of thinking,” explained Habib.

The second speaker was Aji Santoso. He is a student of PBSI FKIP UNS who has won several achievements in the field of language. These achievements include 1st place in the National Short Story Writing Competition KOMBASI Hima PBSI Wiralodra Indramayu University in 2021 and 1st place in the National Short Story Writing Competition by BSO Madura Pintar FIP Trunojoyo Madura University in 2021. He explained the material entitled “Use of Written Indonesian”.

He explained the material ranging from opportunities for Indonesian in the international arena, negative attitudes towards using Indonesian, using written language in an orderly and creative manner, to the process of writing scripts. Aji believes that Indonesian has the opportunity to become an international language due to the positive trend of using Indonesian in the international arena at this time.

“Indonesian has an opportunity as an international language because many other countries use Indonesian as the language they use and learn in their country. For example, Indonesian is currently third after Spanish and has been designated as the second official language in Vietnam. In addition, Indonesian language teaching has been carried out in various institutions in the United States, Morocco, Egypt, Korea, Suriname, Australia, Vietnam, Ukraine, Canada, and Japan. Therefore, the government is increasing the function of Indonesian to become an international language with the aim of demonstrating identity and improving the nation’s competitiveness,” said Aji.

After the presentation of the material, the Sospeba 2022 activity was continued with a question and answer session guided by a moderator. Then, the activity ended with a documentation session.
