FKIP – Two students of the Chemistry Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta won 3rd place in the National Essay Competition at the Education Festival (Edufest) activity organized by the Student Executive Board (BEM) ) FKIP UNS. They were Apfia Riana Devi and Tiksworo Cundhomanik Caturpalestri.
Edufest was a work program from BEM FKIP UNS under the auspices of the Ministry of Student Harmonization and Collaboration (Harmonika). There were three national level competitions in Edufest 2021, namely the Poster Contest, Essay Contest, Music Cover Contest, and Mobile Legend Contest. Meanwhile, the theme raised in the 2021 Edufest Essay Contest was “Millennials’ Strategy in Responding to the Post-Covid-19 Situation”.
Announced as 3rd place winner on Sunday (12/5/2021), Apfia and Tiksworo presented an essay entitled “B-PINETIZ (Basil Leaves and Pineapple Peel Hand Sanitizer): Hand Sanitizer Made from Basil Leaves (Ocimum basilicum) and Pineapple Skin (Ananas comosus) Non Alcohol Based as a Profitable Business Idea in a Pandemic Period”.

Apfia explained that their essay examines the ingredients in pineapple peel and basil leaves that can be used in making hand sanitizer. According to him, the utilization can be a business opportunity and reduce waste in the community.
“Our essay discusses the use of pineapple peel and basil leaves in making hand sanitizer. Pineapple peel and basil leaves contain flavonoids which are antibacterial but their use is still lacking, so we want to make hand sanitizer with these basic ingredients. Thus, apart from being used as As a business opportunity, this activity can also reduce the waste of pineapple peel and basil leaves in the community,” Apfia explained.
Apfia also explained that in addition to utilizing waste pineapple peel and basil leaves, the idea in the essay that they carried emerged because of the very high market demand for hand sanitizer products. Seeing this opportunity, they innovated to make a hand sanitizer product without alcohol but effectively kills germs by utilizing the waste.
“In addition to wanting to use pineapple peel waste and basil leaves, we also see that hand sanitizer is still a basic need for the community and can be used as a business idea during a pandemic. Therefore, we created an innovation hand sanitizer without alcohol which is not only effective in killing germs but also safer on various skin types from pineapple peel waste and basil leaves,” explained Apfia.
At the end of the interview, Apfia said that she hoped that the ideas they had put in the essay could be realized. Furthermore, Apfia hopes to gain knowledge and experience by participating in a similar essay competition.
“We hope that our idea can be realized and become a business opportunity during the pandemic. We also hope that in the future we can add knowledge and experience by participating in a similar essay competition,” said Apfia.
