FKIP – At the end of the series of 46th Anniversary of Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UNS held a Seminar on BIPA V entitled “International Seminar and Indonesian Culture Degree” on Saturday (28/5/ 2022). Held online through the Zoom Meeting application and live broadcast on M Rohmadi Ratu’s Youtube account, the seminar carried the theme “Reflections on Indonesian Language Learning for Foreign Speakers in Five Continents”.

The Seminar on BIPAV FKIP UNS was moderated by Wati Istanti, S.Pd., M.Pd. He is a Lecturer in the Department of Indonesian Language and Literature, Semarang State University (UNNES). The presentation of the material in this seminar was divided into two sessions with two speakers in each session.


The first resource person in the presentation of the second session material was Mahmudin the representative of Bishops from the African Continent. He is the Head of Information, Social and Cultural Affairs (Pensosbud) of the Indonesian Embassy in Rabat, Morocco.

In his presentation, he told stories and shared his experiences about the reasons why Indonesian language learning was developed in Morocco. Furthermore, he also explained the development of Indonesian language teaching in Rabat, Morocco, and what efforts were developed.

“Indonesian language teaching in Rabat, Morocco is carried out in collaboration with Mohammed V University. The success of Indonesian in occupying the top ten languages ​​in the world has re-energized the spirit of learning Indonesian here. In addition, the close structural relationship also inspires the spirit to develop the Indonesian language here, “explained Mahmudin.

The second resource person was Indriyo K. Sukmono a representative from the Americas. He is a Lecturer in the Indonesian Language at Yale University, United State of America (USA). In addition, he is also the American and Canadian BIPA Coordinator. In his presentation, he presented a material entitled “BIPA from Uncle Sam’s Country for Uncle Nus’ Earth”.

Indriyo explains the material in four sub-chapters, namely introduction, institution, teaching, and observation. In the material, he explained the general description of Uncle Sam’s country, where to study BIPA in the USA to technical and Indonesian language teaching programs in the USA. At the end of his presentation, he presented five observations and ideas on teaching Indonesian in the USA.

“I think that what we pay attention to from the observations and ideas in teaching BIPA in the USA are five things. The five things are program development, development of teaching materials, skill guides, training, and experience sharing programs, such as internships,” concluded Indriyo.
