FKIP — Community Service Team Research Group on Indonesian Language and Literature Education Innovation Study Program (Prodi) Indonesian Language and Literature Education (PBSI) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a workshop and mentoring with the theme “ Workshop on Teacher Empowerment with the Application of a Process Approach in Indonesian Language Learning in Junior High Schools during the Pandemic and Post-pandemic Periods” on Monday (13/06/2022) at SMPN 1 Surakarta.
The community service research team is chaired by Prof. Dr. Suyitno, M.Pd. consisting of three lecturers namely Ari Suryawati Secio Chaesar, S.Pd., M.Pd.; Prof. Dr. Andayani, M.Pd.; and Dr. Arif Setyawan, S. Hum., M.Pd.
This activity is carried out as a form of implementing the university’s tridharma, namely teaching, research, and community service. This activity establishes a collaboration between the Indonesian Language Education Doctoral Study Program and the Indonesian Language Teacher Consultation (MGMP) Surakarta City.
The activity began with an opening and a speech. The speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Suyitno, M.Pd. as the head of the service team and Rini Dwi Haryati, S.Pd. as Chairman of the Indonesian Language MGMP Surakarta.
In his speech, Prof. Suyitno said that this empowerment activity was a form of lecturer service.
“This activity is one of the lecturers’ duties to serve. It is hoped that this activity can improve the competence of teachers in teaching Indonesian language and literature,” explained Prof. Suyitno.

The activity continued with the material presented by Prof. Dr. Andayani, M.Pd. He delivered material on “The Problem of Indonesian Language Learning and Edutainment in Junior High Schools in the Digital Era in the Context of Free Learning.”
Prof. Dr. Andayani said that learning Indonesian in the digital era needs to promote learning that is edutainment, namely the learning model used in education that is combined with entertainment, so that it is more in demand.
“The concept of edutainment means combining education and entertainment aspects. This refers to a fun and exciting learning process. The concept of edutainment can be reached in several ways, such as using demonstrations, applying the use of multimedia, using music and songs, combining education with games, inserting humor related to education, using process approaches and role-playing methods in education, giving meaning to every step. explained Prof. Andayani.
The next material was delivered by Ari Suryawati Secio Chaesar, S.Pd., M.Pd. He delivered material on “Application of Process Approach in Indonesian Language Learning in Junior High School.”
Ari said that process-based Indonesian language learning is a development of constructivism theory which emphasizes experience and the process of meaning. Process-based learning is carried out together and is contextual in nature.
“In process-based learning, it is carried out through linking efforts with the situational context. The process approach in learning to read can be done through reading preparation, reading, responding, exploring texts, expanding interpretations,” explained Ari Suryawati, M.Pd.
The activity ended with discussion, question and answer, and messages for Indonesian language teachers.
“Teachers are expected to be consistent in teaching Indonesian, especially in language skills, language attitudes, and an attitude of respecting Indonesian as the unifying language of the Indonesian nation,” concluded Prof. Andayani.
