FKIP – Geography Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta held the International Conference on Anthropocene, Global Environmental Change and Powerful Geography (ICoAGPG). Carrying the theme “The Relational Understanding of Extractive Industries, Climate Change, and Exacerbation of Natural Disasters and Social Injustice”, the activity was held online through the Zoom Meeting application on Saturday (27/8/2022).

This conference was attended by lecturers, students, teachers, and researchers from various countries. The Director of Cooperation, Development and Internationalization of UNS, Irwan Trinugroho, was present and officially opened this international conference. In his remarks, he said that the topics brought up in this conference were very important and in line with global issues.
“The topics brought up in this conference are very important and in accordance with global issues. Various challenges face especially the challenges surrounding the environment. Governments along with private and public sector organizations are also responsible for making people’s lives and security better. Therefore, this international conference discusses more specifically about industrial traffic relations, climate change, national disasters, and world disasters that are beneficial for initiatives to deal with global environmental change,” said Irwan.
This international conference presented four speakers from three countries. The presentation of the material was divided into two sessions, each session filled with presentations by two resource persons. The first presentation of the first session was delivered by Tania Murray Li from the University of Toronto, Canada. He delivered a material entitled “Plantation Life: Corporate Occupation and the Mafia System In Indonesia’s Oil Palm Zone”.
In the material, Tania recounted her experiences in her research in Indonesia which examined the structure and governance of contemporary Indonesian oil palm plantations. He also explained the exploitative nature of plantation life which sacrifices the welfare of the population in the name of economic development by causing ecological damage and loss of livelihoods.
The presentation of the first two sessions was delivered by Janice Ser Huay Lee, from Nanyang Technology University, Singapore. He delivered a material entitled “Global Environmental Impacts of the Logging, Fibber, Oil Palm, and Mining Industries in Indonesia”. Janice said that now better communication is needed about the conservation value of logged-over forests, especially in Kalimantan and Papua.
Meanwhile, the presentation of the material in the second session was delivered by two speakers from within the country. The two resource persons were Erma Yulihastin, Researcher from the Research Center for Climate and Atmosphere, National Research and Innovation Agency, and Yasin Yusup from UNS.
Erma delivered a material entitled “Indonesia as Miniature of World Climate: Learning from the Seroja Storm and the Tidal Flood on the North Coast of Java”. Meanwhile, Yasin presented material with the theme “Critical Anthropocene and Powerful Geography”.
This international conference managed to collect 75 selected articles. All articles received at ICoAGPG 2022 will be published in the IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science as a Scopus indexed proceedings which will contribute to strengthening the academic position of UNS and all participants.
