FKIP – International Office (IO) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held English as Medium of Instruction (EMI)
International Short Courses. The first activity was carried out online through Zoom Meeting on Wednesday (19/10/2022).

The activity was opened directly by the Dean of FKIP UNS, namely Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si. In his speech, he welcomed and said the purpose of this activity.
“As the Dean of FKIP UNS, I would like to welcome the participants who took part in the
EMI Short Courses with a special theme ‘English as Medium of Instruction: Theories and Practices. These courses are useful for upgrading English language skills,” explained Dr. Mardiyana.

The first resource person was Dewi Rochsantiningsih, Ph.D., from Sebelas Maret University. He delivered the material with the title “Defining and Designing EMI”.
“EMI is an instructional teaching model of teaching non-English academic subjects through the medium of English in educational settings where English is not the mother tongue of most students, which aims to facilitate the learning of content knowledge as well as English skills,” he explained.
The EMI context comprises the legacy of British and American colonialism. Second, the pragmatic state.
According to Dewi, there are 5 types of EMI in Indonesia.
“First, EMI in the international program (dual degree). Second, Emi EMI in international
program (single degree). Third, EMI on the regular program. Next, EMI for international
exchange students. Fifth, the EMI Postgraduate Program,” explained Dewi.
EMI for international student exchange students is specially provided, especially for
overseas students and subjects related to Indonesian cultural heritage. The EMI Graduate Program is a postgraduate program in English.
The second resource person was Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan, Ph.D., from the University of Indonesia. He delivered the material with the title “Creating Interaction in EMI Classroom”.
