Moderated by Abdul Haris Setiawan, Ph.D. as Chair of the Entrepreneurship Workshop FKIP UNS Series 2 and Student Affairs Team FKIP UNS, this workshop presented 2 speakers. The first resource person was Drs. Joko Budi Wiryono. He is the Founder and Director of PT Gula Energi Nusantara.
In his presentation, he recounted his struggle to build a liquid sugar business. He said that he did research before establishing his business in 2012. He was motivated to realize Indonesia’s ideal of self-sufficiency in sugar as in the Dutch colonial era. At that time, Indonesia was the second largest sugar exporter after Cuba. After 80 years, Indonesia is currently the second largest sugar importer after Russia.

According to Joko, many sugar factories left by the Dutch were closed because their production was no longer efficient. This is what prompted him to conduct research on the production of liquid cane sugar directly from cane that has received a patent, in addition to other research such as LGI sugar, and blood sugar-lowering cane sugar. At the end of his presentation session, he invited workshop participants to have the courage to start a business.
“Dare to start a business. There are several things you can do to start a business. This includes identifying and evaluating market opportunities, finding solutions for these market opportunities, obtaining the resources needed to run a business, managing resources from the initial or startup phase to the survival phase to the development phase, and managing risks related to business that is occupied, “Joko asked.
The second speaker is Catur Sugiarto, SE, MSM, Ph.D., CDMP. He is the Head of the Startup and Incubation Division of the UNS Directorate of Innovation and Downstreaming. He presented material entitled “Startup Development and MSMEs at Sebelas Maret University”. In this material, he explained the material, starting from examples of incubators and accelerators in Indonesia, the introduction of the UNS Innovation Hub, an overview of UNS’s Semesta Bright program, to its stages.
“UNS Innovation Hub is a Business Incubator at Sebelas Maret University which has a role in helping the process of downstream innovation by facilitating the development of new ideas, channeling creativity, and accelerating innovation with the main agenda being the development of the startup ecosystem, and the commercialization or transfer of technology for academic products, research and innovation by the UNS academic community,” explained Catur.
After the presentation of the material, the activity continued with a question and answer session and ended with a joint documentation session.
