FKIP – Pre-service Teacher Professional Education (PPG) Student Team Batch 1 Study Program Geography Education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta, with a total of 17 students holding a Disaster Awareness, Literacy Awareness Movement (SABEN SASI). The movement occurred on Sunday (07/05/2023) and Sunday (14/05/2023) at Belik Hamlet, Dibal Village, Ngemplak District, Boyolali Regency.
SABEN SASI is a form of implementing the role of students as agents of change through the Leadership Project course guided by Dr. Rita Noviani, S.Si., M.Sc. This activity collaborated with Dibal Village Community partners, especially the Dukuh Belik Youth Organization and school children (TK-SMP), who were the main targets of the activity to raise awareness of the importance of a culture of literacy and disaster resilience from an early age.
Muhammad Zaki Zamani as the Head of the Pre-service PPG Batch 1 of the Geography Education Study Program FKIP UNS, revealed that the SABEN SASI Movement was motivated by the poor record of literacy levels of school children in Indonesia and the high intensity of disasters that frequently hit Indonesia.
“We used to discuss what problems the majority occur in society. Then from the discussion results, we highlight that the literacy level of Indonesian society is deficient, especially among school children. Literacy level is crucial to support the nation’s progress towards Indonesia Gold 2045. In addition, Indonesia is also a country that is in the ring of fire, so it is very prone to disasters. Children are a category that is vulnerable to being affected when a disaster occurs. People of geography also deepen their knowledge of disaster. So, in addition to raising the literacy movement, the resilient movement against children is an initiative for change in the society we choose,” said Zaki.
The activity took place attended by representatives of the village, karang taruna, Dr. Rita Noviani, S. Si., M. Sc as supervisor, Dr. Pipit Wijayanti, S.Si., M.Sc. as the Head of the FKIP UNS Geography Education Study Program, and partner children. Efforts to increase literacy awareness in school children are carried out by presenting a reading corner with various academic and non-academic reading books obtained from donations. During the activity, the children were invited to do activities such as reading, writing, arithmetic, and other literacy activities so that they would know and be comfortable with the existence of a reading corner so that in the future, they would return to the reading corner independently.
Then efforts to increase resilience to disasters are carried out by providing fun packaged material such as storytelling, wayang cartoons, and singing accompanied by movement so that children are always focused but not bored. There is also a disaster mitigation simulation session by taking an earthquake disaster as a pilot. First, children are presented with an earthquake inside or outside the room. Then they receive instructions to carry out mitigation actions according to the material that was previously given.
“Alhamdulillah, during the simulation, the children looked enthusiastic and understood what actions they should take when an earthquake occurs, especially helping guide their friends. We hope for this action, namely action as young pioneers who are tough and respond to disasters,” said Zaki.
Rizaldi Hanif as the representative of the Dukuh Belik Youth Organization, expressed his gratitude for organizing the SABEN SASI activities.
“On behalf of the partners who were invited to work together, we are very grateful to the Pre-service PPG Students Batch 1 of the Geography Education Study Program FKIP UNS, who was extraordinary in initiating this for our children. Certainly very useful and will be very useful for the children’s future,” said Rizaldi.
Zaki hopes the SABEN SASI activity can be an extraordinary change initiative for the community. This movement can be adopted in various regions to improve literacy and resilience to disasters in Indonesia.
“We hope this can be adopted in various regions. As we stated earlier, the problems we raise are not local but national, even though we can only do the repairs locally. Greetings Literacy! Greetings Resilient and Disaster Response!” please Zaki.
