FKIP – Team Hibah MBKM of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta, has finished holding socialization activities and strengthening Indonesian language. This activity was held offline on Wednesday (8/5/2024), at SMP N 1 Ngargoyoso, Karanganyar.
This activity is one of the grant outcomes held by PBSI students class of 2021 who participated in the UNS 2024 MBKM Grant activity. Chaired by Arip Wira Utama, the Group 4 Grant Team focuses on internationalizing Indonesian for foreigners through the introduction of Dodol Garut culinary. In addition, this grant activity also carries additional activities in the form of providing socialization and strengthening of Indonesian language for students of SMP N 1 Ngargoyoso.
The socialization and strengthening of Indonesian language for junior high school students was held with the aim of providing an understanding of Indonesian language to be introduced to foreigners. In this case, internationalizing the Indonesian language is very important to be introduced early on to junior high school students so that later students understand that Indonesian is able to become a language that can compete in the international arena. This socialization and strengthening of the Indonesian language also aims to give students enthusiasm and love for the use of the Indonesian language so that in the future it can become a milestone in the struggle for the internationalization of the Indonesian language.
“We hope that the socialization and strengthening of the Indonesian language carried out for students of SMP N 1 Ngargoyoso can make a starting point for students. So that later they can foster a sense of pride in using good and correct Indonesian. In addition, this activity is expected to encourage students as early as possible to be able to make Indonesian as their daily language,” said Arip Wira Utama.
This socialization and strengthening of the Indonesian language activity presented two speakers who are experts in the field of language and BIPA learning, namely Dwiana Rizki Nur Hanifah and Kenes Ratu Pawestri. Both speakers delivered material related to the use of Indonesian and the internationalization of Indonesian. The first speaker, Dwiana Rizki Nur Hanifah, who is the 2023 Central Java Language Ambassador, delivered material on the habituation of the use of Indonesian in the school environment.
In her presentation, Dwiana began the material by conveying the meaning of Indonesian as the national language and official language of the State of Indonesia. Indonesian, which is used as the language of daily conversation, has various functions, including as the official language of the state; the language of education; as a means of international communication; and as a means of developing culture, science, and technology. In addition, Dwiana also explained several varieties of Indonesian that can be used in daily conversation.
“In education, we have a language of instruction, which is Indonesian. Although in practice there may still be code-mixing, where the teacher uses Indonesian and mixes it with Javanese. In addition, Indonesian is also used as a cross-cultural language because of the many cultures and linguistic diversity in Indonesia,” said Dwiana.
Then, the second material was continued by Kenes Ratu Pawestri who is a BIPA internship student at Yale University. In her presentation, Kenes conveyed her experience of being an intern student who was assigned to teach BIPA at Yale University. Kenes delivered the material related to BIPA to add information and enthusiasm for junior high school students to be able to disseminate Indonesian to the international level.
“BIPA is Indonesian for Foreign Speakers, so we Indonesians teach Indonesian to people abroad, from various countries. When introducing BIPA, friends can use culture by introducing Indonesian culture to foreigners,” said Kenes Ratu Pawestri.
