FKIP – Postgraduate Pancasila and Citizenship Education (PPKn) Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held an online International Conference via Zoom Cloud Meeting on Tuesday (24/8/2021). This time the 1st International Conference on Social Sciences and Education (ICSSE) 2021 was entitled “Strengthening Social Capital and Education in the Time of the Covid-19 Pandemic”.

Prof. Swee-Choo Goh from the Faculty of Human Development, University of Sultan Idris Malaysia and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rusnaini, M.Si as PPKn FKIP UNS Lecturer. The purpose of this activity was to provide academic opportunities from various disciplines and countries to share perspectives on the results of their research.

Prof. Triyanto in his speech explained that this conference provides an interdisciplinary platform that discusses innovation, trends, concerns, practical challenges, and solutions adopted in social science and education by accommodating scientific writings that will be published on various platforms that have been determined. This activity was officially opened by the Dean of FKIP UNS, Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si.

The presentation of the first material was delivered by Prof. Dr. Goh. He explained how narrative pedagogy can be an alternative new way of teaching prospective teachers.

“Actually, the motive behind the emergence of the call for the use of narrative pedagogy for new education consists of four things, namely an evolution of teaching, a dominant pedagogical approach, behavioral pedagogy that does not prepare teaching professionals well (too linear, sequential), and increasing the knowledge of content needed for professionals teacher,” Prof. Dr. Goh explained.

Citing the expert views of Diekelmann and Diekelmann (2009), he also emphasized that narrative pedagogy was not a particular teaching method. Narrative pedagogy can be realized through the creation of educational conditions that support interactive discussions between teachers and students so that students can connect the puzzles of the knowledge they learn into a unified understanding. With the application of narrative pedagogy, students will be trained to interpret a story and then relate it to the learning material. This will eventually change the conventional learning methods that are usually teacher-centered into student-centered learning.

He also explained what preparations need to be made to implement narrative-centered learning or narrative pedagogy, pyramids of pedagogical change to the perspective of pre-service teachers during the narrative session.

Furthermore, the presentation of the second material was delivered by Prof. Dr. Rusnaini. He tried to link social capital with PPKn and how to implement it. Prof. Rusnaini started his presentation by providing an overview of the framework of citizenship on how to change the mindset that is embedded among students towards Civics. In fact, many students do not realize that Civics is an important aspect of student learning activities.

Prof. Rusnaini also explains the dimensions of social capital, how the contribution of social capital can support the development of student performance, and explains why social capital is very beneficial for humans. He argued that social capital is closely related to the so-called civic virtues or moral virtues.

The activity was continued with a question and answer session consisting of one term with six questions. After the question and answer session, the activity ended with the last statement from Prof. Dr. Goh.
