FKIP – Student Press Institute (LPM) Motivasi of the Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held an online opinion writing workshop on Saturday (11/9/2021). Carried the theme “Strengthening the Peaceful Narrative in Social Media”, this activity presented two national speakers, namely Setyo Wiyono, as a journalist for Suara Merdeka and editors of the Suara Merdeka-Solo.com portal and Zamhari, S.Kom. I. as an owner of Jogjapost.com and columnist.

This workshop activity is intended to produce writings that carry messages of peace, are constructive, and bring goodness to the community. “Consolidating the narrative of peace on social media is a very interesting activity theme. It is interesting because your writing is a tool to change the world, constructive writing, and brings a message of peace,” said Prof. Slamet Subiyantoro as Deputy Dean 1 of FKIP UNS in his speech.

The first speaker was Setyo Wiyono presented material with the topic on news writing, news value, elements in the news, and topics outlined in the news. He also explained the problem analysis technique with a review of more than one point of view to avoid subjectivity.

“News writing must, of course, pay attention to news values, namely objective, actual, extraordinary, important, distance (closeness of information to readers). It is very important that an article is written based on actual issues, pays attention to the development of the situation, and is rich in references. References are important points so that balance and validity of writing are maintained, and to avoid subjectivity,” said Setyo.

The next speaker, Zamhari, S.Kom. I. explained material on how to make articles accessible to online/offline media. He explained that many factors behind writing can be published by the media, namely internal and external factors. Internal factors include how the author can express his ideas in written form and dare to express his opinion. While external factors mean factors outside of the author, such as adjusting the writing style with related media, as well as the need for views from more expert people to criticize our writing, and so on.

“I divide the factors that make our writings available to the media into two, namely internal factors and external factors. Internal factors relate to the writer’s self and the ideas written, as well as the courage to express his opinion. Meanwhile, external factors are influenced by the media itself, for example, writing style in related media. We need to increase the number of teachers because every teacher has different knowledge, the more suggestions and inputs, the better our writing will be,” he concluded.
