FKIP – The Doctoral Program of Natural Science Education (IPA) Study Program at Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held a Guest Lecture event with the theme “Improving Science Education Quality in Indonesia: Research Agenda” online through the Zoom Meeting application on Wednesday ( 28/7/2021).

The guest lecturer activities were opened with remarks by Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si as the Dean of FKIP UNS. This event was moderated by Dewanta Arya Nugraha, M.Pd. M.Si. as a lecturer in Science Education at UNS. Meanwhile, the single speaker who attended was Prof. Bambang Sumintono, Ph.D. as a Lecturer in the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling from the Faculty of Education, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia.

The presentation of the material was delivered by Prof. Bambang for 50 minutes. He started the discussion on the development of the science curriculum in Indonesia, starting from the pre-1975 curriculum which still emphasized the principle of students being able to think like scientists to the 2013 curriculum which emphasized the cultivation of character and values as well as high-level thinking skills or often known as HOTS (High Order Thinking). Skill).

“If you look back, actually one of the causes of the development of the science curriculum in Indonesia from year to year often changes because the government system at that time was still not stable. Departing from this, the current curriculum system in Indonesia must place more emphasis on student-focused learning activities, so that students are expected to really understand the knowledge they are learning about, no longer just using conventional methods, where the teacher gives lectures and transfers knowledge,” he explained.

Prof. Bambang also conveyed other material related to the problems of the western curriculum which consisted of three points, namely conceptually, pedagogically, and psychologically.

“These are all realities that we have to face. For this reason, an initiative is needed so that teachers in Indonesia understand basic science and how to teach appropriately. So, the PKG (Teacher Work Stabilization) program was created or currently known as the MGMP (Subject Teacher Conference) to improve the quality of science education in Indonesia, starting with increasing the competence of educators, in this case, teachers,” he explained.

The material presentation session was closed with a statement by Prof. Bambang, who quoted Bybee and Fuchs’s opinion that stated currently high-quality teachers are needed.
“We need high-quality teachers, rigorous content and a coherent curriculum, appropriate tests, and assessments that are in line with learning objectives to improve the quality of education,” he concluded.

The virtual guest lecturer activity ended with a two-term question and answer session with three questioners in each term.
