FKIP — Special Education Study Program (PKh) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta held an international webinar with the theme “_Parenting for Parents of Children with Special Needs _” on Wednesday (9/11/ 2022). This webinar was held offline at the UNS Inn Hotel Surakarta and online through the Zoom Meeting application.

The webinar was opened directly by the Dean of FKIP UNS, Dr. Mardiyana, M.Sc. present online. In his remarks, he explained that UNS has policies that are friendly to children with special needs. He hopes that holding this webinar can provide an overview of how to educate and treat children with special needs.
“At this time the government has made policies that are very concerned about the existence of children with special needs. The same thing has also been done by UNS where in recent years UNS has provided opportunities for prospective students with special needs to pursue education through a special pathway, namely the admissions pathway for students with special needs. UNS also provides facilities so that they do not experience difficulties during the learning process. Hopefully the holding of this activity can give us all an idea of how to treat children with special needs,” hoped Dr. Mardiyana.
Moderated by Zalfaa Azalia Pursita and Yumna who are students of the PKh FKIP UNS Study Program, this webinar presented five speakers. This webinar was divided into two sessions. The first session consisted of presentation of material by three speakers. Then, the second material presentation session consisted of material presentation by two speakers. At the end of each session, a question and answer discussion session was opened.
The first resource person was Dr. Aliza Aliaz from Malaysia. She presented material on tips for success in educating children with special needs. She explained material ranging from children’s learning styles, the structure of learning at home, to tips on educating children with special needs. She stressed that parents must involve the role of children with special needs in family activities.
“To educate children with special needs, it is necessary to first identify the child’s learning style, whether visual, audio, or kinesthetic. Then, make children feel they have a function or role in everyday life at home. This can be done by inviting children to make pictures, steps, or simple rules,” said Dr. Aliza.
The second resource person is Dr. drg. Julia Maria van Tiel from the Netherlands. She presented material about the growth and development of children with developmental leaps. The third resource person was Isanka P. Gamage from Sri Lanka who presented material on the role of parents in building children’s independence.
Furthermore, the fourth resource person is Umi Susilowati, S.ST., M.Kes. from Indonesia. She presented material on hypnoparenting for parents of children with special needs. Meanwhile, the last resource person in this webinar was Dr. Nining Moordiningsih, Psi. She presented material on effective communication between parents and children with special needs at home. In her presentation, she conveyed five basics in understanding children with special needs.
“The first thing that happens to parents when they find out that their child has special needs is usually to deny, then get angry, not accept, to depression. After that, start receiving. There are five steps to understanding children with special needs, namely seeing, hearing, providing comfort, protecting, helping children direct themselves to things they like, and building their hopes. Remember, educating is the same as communicating. So, accept yourself and your child as they are, encourage themselves, and control yourself,” said Dr. Nining.
