FKIP – Pre-service Teacher Professional Education (PPG) Student Batch 1 of 2022 Chemistry Education Study Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta who are members of a team held a Socialization on Growing Interest in Reading in Early Childhood on Monday (19/2/2023). The socialization was held at Al-Barokah Islamic Kindergarten, Surakarta City.

The student team is chaired by Niken Windi Saputri and comprises 5 members. The five members are Noor Azizah Afis Laily, Nunung Cahyaningsih, Palupi Wiragasari, Ratna Kurniasari, and Ratna Yunita. This socialization was carried out as part of the Leadership Project course assignment.

This socialization presented a guest speaker, namely Audina Solicha. He is a literacy activist and founder of Litera Medika Reading Park in Kuningan Regency, West Java and Co-Founder of Semarak Inspiration UNS. The focus of the discussion on this socialization is tips or strategies that parents can do to foster an interest in reading in early childhood to form a habit of liking reading.

According to Audina, one of the strategies parents can use to form a habit of reading is to give their children gifts in the form of reading books such as fairy tales. The number of books parents provide can be small, but parents should read the reading books consistently and repeatedly.

Niken hopes this activity can foster student leadership competence and become a starting point for similar ongoing activities.

“Through this activity, students are expected to be able to develop themselves in leadership competencies by seeing opportunities related to the potential of a community to be empowered so they can develop. This activity is also expected to be a starting point for students to be able to carry out similar activities on an ongoing basis,” Niken hoped.

Apart from that, Niken also hoped that this activity would raise parents’ awareness of the importance of cultivating reading habits for young children by applying the tips presented by resource persons.

“We hope that through this activity, parents or guardians of early childhood can be aware of the importance of cultivating reading habits in children from an early age. Apart from that, parents are also expected to apply the tips described to get their children used to reading, which is the key to opening the gates of the world,” hoped Niken.
