FKIP – Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta holds the International Conference on Learning Innovation and Quality Education (ICLIQE) which is the 5th international conference on learning innovation and quality education through Zoom Meeting. The conference which was held on Saturday (4/9/2021) was entitled “The Future of Education and Counseling in Society 5.0”.
The event began with remarks by Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Sajidan, M.Si. as Vice Chancellor for Planning, Cooperation, Business, and Information. In his speech, he explained that this forum was in line with UNS’s commitment to contribute to sustainable development. Not only at the national level but also at the regional and international levels. According to him, this conference also has a purpose as a forum to discuss educational trends and educational innovations.
The first speaker was Prof. Madya Dr. Salleh Amat from Universitas Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) presented material with the topic “Readiness of Counselors in Providing Counseling Services during the Covid-19 Pandemic”. The increasing number of pandemic cases in various countries has a fairly serious impact on people’s mental health.
“A person before a pandemic usually experiences mental health problems such as anxiety, stress, family problems, financial problems, and others. However, now we are suddenly faced with a pandemic where the situation is getting worse. This clearly requires support from psychologists, counselors, and psychiatrists in dealing with mental health issues,” he explained.

According to him, a big challenge for counselors in providing assistance to people affected by the pandemic is understanding the culture of clients in dealing with their issues. Approach techniques with technology must still pay attention to the suitability of the client’s local culture. He also emphasized that understanding the different cultural backgrounds of clients is critical to working effectively with clients from different backgrounds. In carrying out a counseling session, a counselor must also have good cooperation skills with various parties.
The presentation of the next material on “Case Study University Cultural Inclusivity at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sebelas Maret University” was delivered by Prof. Drs. Sunardi, M.Sc., Ph.D. from UNS. He started his presentation by giving an overview of the state of the education world during the globalization era of industry 5.0 and society 5.0.
“So far, the world has unresolved problems, one of which is the injustice of education services for people with disabilities and those who live in poverty,” said Prof. Sunardi.

Furthermore, Prof. Sunardi explained that one of the solutions proposed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in response to these problems was to provide a more humane education with a focus on creating a society without discrimination and exclusivism in accessing education services. The solution is the creation of an inclusive university. In practice, there is a measure of the inclusiveness of a university which consists of cultural standards, practical standards, and supporting standards. Prof. Sunardi also presented the results of his case study on cultural inclusivity at UNS.
