FKIP – Collaborating with the Masters (S-2) Regional Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSD) Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta, the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI) held a seminar BIPA entitled “BIPAAN VI: Indonesian for Foreign Speakers at Fatoni University”. The seminar was held offline on Thursday (7/9/2023) in the PBSI IE201 study program classroom.

This BIPA seminar was attended by all students of the PBSI FKIP UNS Study Program class of 2020 and several BIPA internship students from several universities in Indonesia. In his speech, Dr. Raheni Suhita, M. Hum. as the Head of the PBSI FKIP UNS Study Program, revealed that the seminar activity which invited resource persons from Thailand, was aimed at strengthening students’ understanding of BIPA.

“We hope that this program, which is held with the PBSD Masters Study Program, will be useful for students because it is by the BIPA teaching courses for undergraduate students, especially in BIPA learning courses,” said Dr. Raheni.

The same thing was also conveyed by the Head of the PBSD FKIP UNS S-2 Study Program, Dr. Edy Suryanto, M.Pd. in his speech. He said that this BIPA seminar could be used to share information between the two countries in terms of teaching and disseminating Indonesian abroad.

“Through this activity, we hope that we will be able to share problems related to BIPA and learn together about BIPA learning with Dr. Suhailee Sohnui. Apart from that, we will also be able to share information and discuss various cultural experiences from Thailand in Indonesia so that BIPA can be more advanced in the future. “Students can also have the opportunity to become BIPA teachers both at home and abroad,” said Dr. Edy.

The activity continued with the presentation of material regarding the development and learning of BIPA which was carried out at Fatoni University, Thailand, with speaker Dr. Suhailee Sohnui. Dr. Suhailee has studied Malay and Indonesian for 9 years, as well as experience studying for Master’s and Master’s degrees in Indonesia, making her fluent in Indonesian.

Dr. Interest Suhailee’s interest in Indonesian is based on Indonesia’s large population, which makes her interested in learning Indonesian in more depth. Apart from that, his undergraduate studies at Fatoni University also provided many Indonesian-related activities in the Malay language department with an Indonesian concentration.

The spread of Indonesians in Thailand is also very rapid, especially in Southern Thailand. Indonesian in Thailand first started in Central Thailand, then in 2001 it was taught at Thammasat and spread to several cities in Thailand to Fatoni University.

Apart from the lessons taught to students in Thailand, the Thai government also collaborates with various universities in Indonesia. This collaboration includes a place for Thai students to do internships in Indonesia and collaboration in BIPA teaching which brings teachers and lecturers from Indonesia to Thailand. These various collaborations aim to disseminate the Indonesian language more massively.

After presenting material regarding the history and development of BIPA in Indonesia, the seminar continued with a question and answer session and discussion with Dr. Suhailee. The seminar closed with the handing over of a certificate to Dr. Suhailee by the Head of the PBSD S-2 Study Program and a documentation session.
